I wouldn't have liked the show as much without the stupid looking thing. I mean I still probably would've enjoyed it just cause of it's cast. Just not as much.

Wasn't there a short story about a tree with a hole in it in the arctic circle that, after being stranded, they found blood leading back to it, as it picked off the survivors one by one? Or was that just some creepypasta?

Shame this series heavily emphasis the book rather than the actual events that took place. Discovering that the captain had been canibalized, that a lot of corpses were scattered across King William Land and they had multiple encounters with the Inuits even after sailing Eros and Terror again made me wonder what tales they could have written as they tried to imagine those men digging deeper and deeper in despair through out those 2-3 years they were out there trying to survive. The TV series didn't do it enough justice.

The real life events are too depressing. The survivors took one of the heaviest life boats and packed it full of unusable items like handkerchiefs and books and tried to drag it across the ice to the nearest flowing river, which they thought they could row up the river to the nearest British base hundreds of miles away. They were out of their minds with delirium from sickness and lead poisoning, and cannibalizing the dead bodies. At least a few of them made it off the island and across the ice to the mouth of the river, but they didn't make it any farther than that. Some of their bones were found scattered, including the human-butchered mandible of Crozier.

That was Fitzjames, not Crozier. They never found Crozier, it's unknown if he was one of the survivors who was with a group headed towards Pelly Bay (I think?) or if he was one of the high-ranking commands that died somewhere across Terror Bay, according to the Inuits.

I think for a series called the Terror, depicting the brutal survival those men had to endure seemed fitting. It would have been hell on earth, nothing to eat or hunt, slowly succumbing to curvy and possibly lead poisoning and the natives being unable to help out the crew because there simply weren't enough resources to go around and the men would have to fend for themselves.
