Why didn't his career take off after A New Hope?

He's not a good actor, and Harrison Ford was way hotter.

The Big Red One was pretty good though.

The accident he was in really fucked him up and he was never the most compelling actor in Star Wars. Out of the main cast he had the weakest performance. It worked for Star Wars though because Luke is supposed to be the relatable every man.

>When Amadeus was adapted for film in 1984, Hamill auditioned to reprise his role as Mozart, but lost the part to Tom Hulce. A studio executive told the producers of the film, "I don't want Luke Skywalker in this film". The film director, Milos Forman told Hamill that, "No one is believing that the Luke Skywalker is the Mozart."
For some reason old Hollywood execs thought an actor being recognized was actually a bad thing. Little did they know people love to point at the screen and say "hey its that guy!"

Ok sure, he was too boyish looking at first and the car accident fucked his shit up and the 80's valued macho manly leading men for roles but there were plenty of dweebish twink actors like Matthew Broderick and Michael J Fox. They had relatively successful careers. What gives?

You're right, he was godawful in A New Hope, better in Empire Strikes Back and by Return of the Jedi, he and James Earl Jones were the only ones who gave a shit, everyone else had completely checked out.

I'm not sure if Lucas is to blame for his bad performance in ANH, he's not an actor's director, just look at the Prequels.

It didn't work for A New Hope though, I swear the first time I heard his shitty delivery of the Tosche Station line, I cringed so hard.

That's why whenever I rewatch that movie, I watch the Japanese dub.

I don't think he was out of place in ANH. It was a fairly dry movie, everyone's acting was good but somewhat theatrical. It felt like an older movie than it was.

His performance in ANH isn't bad, he just had some of the worst lines. Luke is a legit whiner and bitch for a lot of the movie, but it works for his arc. Lucas apparently told him to play everything straight, it's not appreciated anymore because Star Wars is so ingrained in pop culture but at the time so much of Star Wars was bafflingly goofy and strange to the point Hamill thought it was parody. If Luke had an isekai like performance and reacted to everything like "Holy shit there's a robot and a giant hairy monster" it would've ruined the film. His performance served its purpose well.

You should learn how different the contracts were in the 40s and 50s. Studios practically owned the actors, so of course it made sense to use them as much as possible since they got paid the same either way.

Movies were consumed differently in that time. The studio system atbthat time had the same actors on contract cranking out slop left and right, none of the movies got too big relative to one another. The advent of consumer television began changing how movies were prodcued. Eventually the Hollywood production companies figured out that they needed fewer and bigger films to draw people away from theur television sets. Spielberg made his name producing summer blocbusters, as did a number of other directors. When you star in one blockbuster that everyone saw, you're more likely to be typecast as that charcater, as opposed to an actor that was in 20 different movies that collectively grossed what 1 later movie would.

He tried to be a serious actor for a bit with Witness. Fugitive gave him a little boost, otherwise it's slop
