thrillers going up? I had the feeling they peaked in the 80s and 90s. what kind of thrillers do we have nowadays? Shit like The Informant is the last one I can think of.

>graph starts at 1910
>supposedly there were some musicals made around that time before completely disappearing until the invention of sound
Where the fuck are those supposed musicals from before the invention of sound?

I bet they put in Edutainment garbage in there. Compare a documentary from the 70 & 80s with today's history channel garbage. It's worlds apart.

The 20s was when they invented films with synchronised sound, but even as far back as 1900 you could make a silent film and record the audio on a phonograph, print out the film and record and try and play them at the same time, there's loads of very early short films with sound as a result

This is the data it used for the numbers, all musicals from 1910 to 1919:

https://www.imdb.com/search/title/?release_date=1910-01-01,1919-12-31&genres=musical

And that YouTube video I linked is an example of one that still exists (unfortunately most early films are lost because the physical film was highly flammable).

You mean like that documentary about lemmings where the director pushed them over the hill to die and since then people think they commit suicide?

This makes me sad, I love musicals... singing in the rain, tommy, jesus christ superstar, the blues brothers, west side story... now there's this trend of casting actors to sing, with obvious results. Chicago sucked, Les Mis probably sucked, moulin rouge etc.

Hey, how about we hire SINGERS to sing in our musical??

Broad (straight) comedies have, but there's loads of romcoms and action comedies and horror comedies so the dip isn't very noticeable.

Musicals and Westerns have collapsed. Maybe Hollywood and Nashville should team up and cast some country music stars in action-adventure films to jump start both genres simultaneously.

Comedy isnโ€™t accurate. It should look similar to westerns but with the drop off shifted farther to the right.

We need more mystery movies, and to recognise mystery as its own genre that doesn't necessarily contain horror/thriller/crime elements.
