How can anybody watch this and think, "Oh yeah, this guy was a genius."

No no no. You see, you just didn’t get it.
Lynch was a genius and you just didn’t get it because you got Lynched and that’s why you didn’t get it.

You need to be familiar with Lynch's body of work to get it, including unrealized projects like Ronnie Rocket.

Twin Peaks was his best because Mike Frost was there to pull Lynch by the chain and cockblock his most self-indulgent impulses

Unfortunately, the fanbase gave him a blank check for season 3 and Frost got sidelined

Season 3 it's an absolute betrayal of Lynch's own moral message in season 1-2: focus on the donut, not the hole

an absolute hole of a season, with only the Dougie Jones episodes offering any sort of respite from its bleakness

What's there to get? It's a funny short film about a man interrogating a monkey. It's amusing.

That is not the moral message of the first two seasons. I'd say it's more "you cannot appreciate the sweetness of the donut without the bitterness of black coffee to contrast it." Meanwhile, Season 3 is more "you can never really go home again" if I had to summarize it.

>an absolute hole of a season, with only the Dougie Jones episodes offering any sort of respite from its bleakness
That was the point. Dougie was a shining light in a world that's become increasingly dark without the light of Laura

It's a parody of old Film Noir tropes.
If you aren't familiar with those old movies, you probably wouldn't get it.
