I remember getting really angry over this movie when I saw it in theaters.
>black zombie starts an uprising
>even knows how to use weapons
>starts to instruct others how to follow along
>many people die
>eventually our lead characters find them at an impasse and have the ability to obliterate them
>main character cucks out and says ‘They're just looking for a place to go’
>shares a knowing acknowledgement with the black zombie janitor
>”uhhh yeah they’re gonna find a place to kill more people you dumb faggot”
>inb4 Romero was making a comment on refugees blah blah blah

I agree with some of what you say but I like the movie because it follows the logical apocalyptic sequence of events that would occur within the context of Romero's zombie movies.
>Night: the early stages of the outbreak
>Dawn: civilization is in chaos and starting to fall
>Day: civilization has fallen, the pockets of humanity that survived the chaos are doing the best they can to survive, arguably only delaying the inevitable
>Land: the pockets of humanity start to fall to the overwhelming zombie horde
I'm not saying Land is a good zombie movie or one of the best installments in Romeros zombie movie series (I like Day the most). I wouldn't say any of Romeros other zombie movies are "great" movies either. It's the story overall story arc that I really like and Romero told the best zombie story arc. Land plays it's part in telling that story arch.

Whenever I heard the original Dawn Of The Dead lauded as a consumerist satire I always tend to wonder if it was intentional or not? I always get this feeling like Romero just brandished the claim to make the movie seem starter than it was when all he set out to do was just make a zombie movie in a shopping center.

Night of the Living Dead was not meant to be political and he said he cast a black man as the lead because he was the best man he could find for the role, but later people said it was politically charged (black man slapping a white woman, black man being carried out by authorities after being shot).

With Dawn of the Dead it has to be intentional though because of the way some shots linger or move from zombies to manequins and plenty of the little plot points and ideas.

Serious question. Why do fans pretend that Day of the Dead is a better film than Resident Evil: Extinction? Extinction (by the Highlander guy) is a straight up ripoff, but everything about it is better. The acting is better. The dialogue is so much better. I don't quite get Romero's fanbase. Especially when they talk about how he should have directed Resident Evil. His movies have some of the worst acting of any mainstream film. The scripts are so on the nose and have nothing really interesting to say. It feels like there's this blind cult of personality around the man. Hey, I get it. Romero was important. But that doesn't make his work good. On the flipside Romero fans constantly shit-talk the Resident Evil movies and pretend that they have worse acting and dialogue than Romero's stuff, and I don't get WHY they're so committed to that cope.

the characters are paper-thin even by romero standards and it rushes through the plot at a comic-book pace. it introduces too many characters who don't serve any purpose. it was a studio film and the whole style of it is very safe and conventionally cinematic in a way that feels uncharacteristic of the series. riley is like a stock hero rather than an actual character. he could've been dropped in from some shooter videogame of the time. the plot revolving around paper money is unnecessarily on-the-nose satire and it only makes things more confusing.

Resident Evil: Extinction starts off good in terms of setting the scene for "ragtag group of zombie apocalypse survivors" and the guys in the Umbrella bunkers detailing their near depleted resources but quickly descends in generic action slop (when they go to Vegas to get fuel). I'd argue Resident Evil: Afterlife is better comparison to Day of the Dead.

The only "reason" Dawn of the Dead was set in that shopping mall is because Romero's friend was the manager and so he probably got a very good deal (and thus made the movie for basically peanuts) by shooting overnights in mainly the one location.

I agree his zombies are great. Old does not mean bad. But it's unrefined. Today any bozos or half competent army could demolish slow zombies. They are not that scary. Does that make them bad? No. Nosferatu is a good vampire movie but still old and primitive. You expect that when ideas are new like that.

The big thing is it's just kind of a dumb movie. The whole premise is ridiculous, and the class critique it attempts falls flat. That wealth is this valuable in a post apocalyptic society is absurd, and things like John Leguizamo's character trying to pull off a heist to steal $5 million doesn't even make any sense, because where the is he going to go? They mention there being an outpost they haven't heard from recently at one point in the film, but that's it. There's no guarantee that any other community they find will even use paper currency. Dawn has a similarly unsubtle critique of consumerism, and that none of this shit really matters, that actually makes sense in the context of the film.
It's also the least "Romero" Romero movie I have ever seen. Whole thing just looks and feels odd if you have seen any of his other stuff.
I did kind of like the retarded guy who was a master marksman, and the big death truck they had was pretty cool I guess
>>211664813
Of course it was intentional. Romero isn't a subtle writer, see Land and Diary.
>>211665261
Both Dawn and Day suggested zombies could remember parts of their lives from when they were living, with Dawn suggesting that the zombies fall back into the routines that had when living.
>Night of the Living Dead was not meant to be political and he said he cast a black man as the lead because he was the best man he could find for the role
This is true, but a lot of the dialogue in Night was improvised or rewritten by the actors. Most of Ben's character came from Duane Jones. Romero had originally written him as a more uneducated blue collar type of guy. The ending was also something Jones pushed for
>I convinced George that the Black community would rather see me dead than saved, after all that had gone on, in a corny and symbolically confusing way. The heroes never die in American movies. The jolt of that, and the double jolt of the hero being Black seemed like a double-barreled whammy.

Hack does not mean "bad filmmaker", hack means "creates films to the standards of a producer for the express purpose of money," hence the term "studio hack." Romero was ANYTHING but.
