It's the same rot that's apparent everywhere else. Throwaway American cartoons made for syndication in the '80s and '90s look like masterpieces compared to the slop they produce now.

What modern anime can I watch that doesn't have some retard having a self esteem crisis over minor failures and some long speech by faces standing still in a slowly panning camera about how they're wrong?

There is a tonne more anime produced now with quicker turnarounds. Talent is spread thin. You rarely get hand-drawn mechas anymore because that work is too intensive.
