How interesting is it, that a 2 minute scene with an incestuous psychopath, can inspire so much more empathy and emotion, than basically all movies (especially modern ones). A skilled director can make an audience care about somebody in just a few minutes, but all the movies from today are all so soulless, that 99% of them, after 2 hours, I dont give a fuck about anybody. I not every movies gonna be made by a master, and inspire emotion, but its gotten so much worse

The tragedy of it was that even if it was incest, they were just two young teenagers fooling around with no ill intent. They didn't think that what they were doing was wrong. It was pure. Of course, Oh-Dae Su saw them and told his friend and that friend told everyone. So, everything happened because of his fat fuck friend which is rather anticlimactic. In the remake, the Oh-Dae Su counterpart paraded them in the school as laughingstocks making the revenge much more understandable.

Also, the hypnosis angle killed the first movie. Remove that, like the remake did, and it's 10/10. if he just used hypnosis to get OH-Dae su to fuck his daughter then the point is lost.

I suggest anyone familiar with the movie to read the manga that the movie was based on.

Not going to say if it was good or bad, but it's definitely different. You'll be amazed what the original director turned that source material into for the movie.

It's a fun watch and unfairly maligned because people are just dogpiling for meme purposes. It's inoffensive and does the exact same thing BUT changes up the few flaws the original has (the hypnosis, making Oh-Dae Su more complicit) but also fucks up everything else. Hardly the cinematic travesty people claim it as. In fact, if you take it as a 70's Death Wish type movie but in the 2010's, it becomes much better. It's made in that vein. Also, nude Lizzie Olsen in the prime of her youth and the villain's performance is excellent and memorable.

The original reason for the revenge in the manga is so fucking dogshit. Music making him cry and witnessing that? Fucking what?

The problem is that some of the shit they fuck up is some of the iconic scenes of the original. Missing the point of the masturbation scene is a sin.

The main issue is that it is entirely unnecessary as a movie and not distinct enough to be its own thing. Worst of all it just looks totally bland. Same exact thing happened to the GitS movie. Just a weird neither here nor there blandification of the source material that serves no particular purpose whatsoever.

Great films were always and will always be a rare breed. A movie as good/unique as Oldboy doesn't come along very often and that's what makes it special. Exceptional things are, by definition, the exception.

In other words, it's not the movies. It's you. It's how jaded, cynical and closed-minded you have become. It's also this place. You spend too much time on this board which conditions you to hate everything regardless of merit and to wallow in pointless misery.

tl;dr see more films, be more open minded, spend less time on 4chan

>Badly overacting
>It's le good
I can't understand why fucking Koreans act so badly. What's the point of this? In old films, this is noticeable, but it's understandable, because most of the actors of that period were taken from the theater, where it takes a little overacting and making grimaces so that people from the back seats can see the emotions. But it's not the 19th century now.

>everything happened because of his fat fuck friend
Everything happened because Dae-su didn't keep it to himself in the first place. Woo-jin outright explains to both Dae-su and the viewer that was why he fucked over Dae-su's life. It didn't need to be more understandable because it can't be more fucking clean cut than that.
Furthermore, that part about Dae-su being the first blabber mouth explains why he was satisfied with Dae-su cutting his tongue off in the end. In the remake, Brolin has a little mental breakdown and Copley kills himself. The presentation of which doesn't even reach the asshair of the original's flashback. https://youtu.be/CybajmsWfVI
>if he just used hypnosis to get OH-Dae su to fuck his daughter then the point is lost
He didn't use hypnosis to get Dae su to fuck his daughter. Again, the villain spends most of the final moments of the movie explaining it, pointing out that even if both individuals were susceptible to hypnosis, that doesn't mean they end up in love which is what his goal was. Their meeting, interaction, and suddenly passing out was as far as the hypnosis went. Everything after was more or less left to chance, which is why he was ecstatic when he saw that they indeed fell in love and fucked in the motel.
https://youtu.be/HxYELfW24PY
You have to be as fucking stupid as Spike Lee or whoever the fuck that wrote the script of the remake to both not understand and completely misunderstand something that the villain outright fucking explains what his plan was.

>then calls him jaded for wanting this greatness to stop being an exception
Instead of typing all of that you could've recommended some amazing current movies instead. Oh wait, you can't, and thus the other anon is proven correct.

Park Chan-work has a pretty unique style all around. Some of his Korean works like Sympathy for Mr Vengace, Lady Vengeance, Handmaiden can compare more directly to Oldboy, mean while Thirst, Decision to Leave or JSA share style but are not as gritty.

The original sucked ass because Dae-su just begs like a cuck at the end instead of caving in Woo-jin for imprisoning him for over a decade. But gooks are natural cowards so maybe that is to be expected

He tried to kill him but his bodyguard stopped him. Then Woo-jin revealed that his henchmen was going to reveal the truth to her that she fucked her own dad, which is why he broke down begging and ultimately cutting his tongue off.
The remake doesn't end with Brolin killing Copley directly as well so why the fuck are you even bringing that up to begin with.
You're a fucking idiot.

Oldboy is a cinematic and editing masterpiece, and the remake has none of that.
