Why is Jared Leto such an over-the-top actor? I find it distracting.

He didn't want to be forever stuck as some wooden Keanu type based on "Jordan Catalano".

I liked him in Blade Runner and Lord of War. Not really in anything else.

Actors are taught NOT to care, because actors all care too much by default. Michael Caine said something in a master class to the effect: Acting is the art of relaxation. The less you try, the better.

It abandoned the plot to start jerking off the original movie instead of telling a compelling story

He's good in 2049 because his brand of "acting" fits the character perfectly.

I like the movie, but I can't disagree with you. The ending kinda sucks.

I like K as a character and concept. The issue is that it's not wholly original (what is?) and he's stuck in a bad story, so you leave the theater after 3 hours with fuck all, unless it's you're fifteen and it's likely your first exposure to the genre, in which case it's the best thing since sliced bread.
That's kinda the issue though; no film/game/album/etc... should be reliant on the ignorance of youth/inexperience. Especially when the production is helmed by 50 year-old men who should know better. I'm starting to question what the fuck Denny's role in his films are, especially after Dune, cause holy fuck were those nonsense.
Dude's starting to give me heavy George Lucas vibes, but lacking all charisma.

It gets even better: they made him look like this for the prequel show. And his eyes are that way because an angry replicant girl seeking revenge uses a samurai sword to slash him across the face

The main conflict of 2049 is just too silly to take seriously. There's no reason to believe that replicants couldn't be made to breed or that they couldn't just keep scaling up factories. The guy seems to be able to pop out new replicants quickly and kill them off wantonly since they're trivial. There's no reason to think the top of the line breeding model would die giving birth its first time. And what worth is the replicant child when it's locked away in an isolated room for thirty years?

And since replicants were banned and Wallace had to fight so hard to get them allowed back on Earth, there's no reason to continue making them indistinguishable from humans rather than extremely obvious. Give them blue skin. Two glowing eyes. An irremovable giant serial number around their neck. It's retarded to make it so they blend in and you need specialized police to track them down, beat them up, and force them to look a certain direction to check their number. They can still fulfill the same purpose of carrying heavy shit, fighting wars, slaving away, and prostitution yet be obviously robots.
