The sheer amount of Simpsons voice actors who have speaking roles in this also adds a lot of charm. It's a great time capsule of the late 90s.

This was the first movie where I thought "wow this is kind of a dumb movie" when godzilla jumped into the Hudson and it made that little splash.

It’s fun for what it is and think the tide is turning on it. Most people I hear today seem to think it’s decent when it’s not constantly compared to the source material (which lets be honest has its fair share of stinkers). In nigga words “this movie be fire when you don’t got a Kajiu bitch crying in your ear

1998

(CONS!)

> Lack of classic Godzilla's aggressiveness & invulnerability.

> Arguably too much time playing Jurassic Park with the babies (I was fine with it)

> Arguably too much time spent on romance (didn't bother me the last time I watched it)

> CGI for the babies doesn't hold up.

(PROS!)

> God tier score & opening credits.

> Great first attack on NYC, handled in a realistic disaster manner similar to how Gamera 3 handled it although less bleakly.

> Fantastic submarine battle.

> Good Helicopter chase.

> Cool military porn that isn't ever "America fuck yeah-ish"

> Godzilla's death scene is extremely well done regardless of the disappointment of him being killed by normal missiles.

> Godzilla's classic nuclear origin & nature remains intact they just swapped America for France.

> Decent to good overall cast. Reno is solid. Broderick is a bit meek but still a likable enough non annoying lead.

> Zilla's design is solid just not for being Godzilla.

> CGI for the adult Godzilla holds up reasonably well.

> Practical effects for the babies is decent (their heads are a bit oversized).

(External opportunities it presented & took advantage of!)

> Spawned the fantastic animated series.

(External opportunities it denied us!)

> It assfucked us out of the beautiful looking Stan Winston (rip) Godzilla movie.

>How is it unfaithful?
For my money, it is that it treats Godzilla like a giant deer that accidently wandered into Manhattan.
Also, the movie sliding into blatant scenes that Emmerich saw in Jurassic Park in the latter half does not help it at all.

>recast Matthew Broderick's character and the blonde love interest (absolutely terrible actress)
>better CGI, it's miles off from Jurassic Park which was ~5 years older
>get rid of the JP influences in the 3rd act
>cut the petty fuck you to Siskel and Ebert
there, it's now an extremely solid American Godzilla movie

I still remember going to see this movie with a friend from school. His mum took us and they had one of those cars where the two back seats actually faced backwards so the entire trip to and from we were making faces at cars behind us. Then afterward we played N64 at his house.

Because the military are the ones that do most of the city wrecking while the giant monster runs away like a little bitch since it can't take a hit because Emmerich thought it would be an ebin subversion of expectations to do a Cat and Mouse story where the Mouse is 150 feet tall.

They named the mayor and his assistant after Ebert and Siskel because Emmerich was butthurt about their negative review of ID4. But it was ultimately a pointless joke because as Ebert pointed out in his review of Godzilla 98, Emmerich didn't even have the monster step on him or eat him.

The animated series spin-off was pretty kino. Every time I watch the movie I have to remind myself that Randy, Monique, and NIGEL aren't actually in it and Craven and Elsie are barely even characters and I get sad.
