A friend of mine was an extra in this movie. He was one of the kids who kick Russel Crowe while he's down. He told me that he got to sit in Sharon Stone's lap, and he deeply regrets that he was still at the age where cooties were a thing, cause he hated her calling him cute. I didn't believe him until his mother confirmed it.

lol, it WAS bad. It's a terrible excuse for a Western. There's actually a quite good Louis L'Amour one with Sam Elliot with the same title. Ten times better.

Raimi had no business doing a movie like that. And Hackman tarnished his rep a little by appearing in it.

it still is comically bad. Just because it has cool shots and good actors doesn't make it good. Raimi found out that his hamfisted over-the-top cartoony style of storytelling works great in comic book genre but terrible in the western genre because comic books and horror you expect it to be campy and it makes it funny but it just doesn't work when you take the tropes of a western to 11 - it isn't funny it just feels weird.

R Crumb was sort of unofficially inducted into the MBTI type system as an INFP ('Investigator', sort of near to the INFJ who's supposed to be the 'Advocate' or even Anthropologist), you get a sense that he was typologising a lot on the streets of San Francisco and Skutch reads as a distilled essence on the type of American he dislikes.

Ebert's arrogance never hurt the show or his reviews imo, Siskel even lays out in that video what would've saved American movie-making by taking it in a more mature direction. Funny enough they wanted more dialogue, essentially 4 minute dialogue scenes like in Pulp FIction, pulling from French New Wave or even Rohmer, but it's hard to imagine. Many people have criticised American films as mere 'films about people talking [often with guns]' but it's done so differently from the French because they generally aren't focusing on slice-of-life films.

Come to think of it, didn't Raimi's Spider-Man Trilogy devolve into villain-of-the-week appearances and will-they-won't-they romance? Nothing happens after the first film, it's a repeat of the errors of 'The Quick And The Dead', extended to epic length.

I saw it in the theater opening week, it was roughly 1/6 full, i thought it looked good but too clean, and Raimi's direction was so cartoonish that I left sorta depressed. I knew it wasn't doing well, it killed Stone's career but Raimi was more to blame. Hackman was wasted, phoning in his Unforgiven cred. This movie is when the 90s became no match for the 80s, it was the first I remember adults bitching about being gay and proto woke. Raimi is also top 5 most overrated directors ever, only the first two Evil Deads are classic, his Spider-Mans are nostalgia bias but best for that character sadly, James Cameron should have directed Spidey as planned

Because he directed this like a comedy, almost like a musical. It sucks. Raimi had three huge opportunities. If he weren't a tribe member, he never would have been given IP later.

Darkman had one of the biggest marketing campaigns ever because Batman was so huge.

Army of Darkness was hated on release. Most people didn't know it was a sequel. It lost a ton.

This movie was the definition of a studio flop.

It's great fun. People just can't handle a western that breaks the stylistic mold. The crazy camera angles are being criticized?? WTF! My only criticism would be the script itself. A lot of it covers well traveled ground and tropes. If anything, Raimi tried to spice up mediocre writing.

I agree. He did sneak in that creepy 9/11 predictive monologue into A Long Kiss Goodnight, which is one tier below The Lone Gunmen pilot as far as wtf. And if his script for Sgt. Rock for Arnold was made by McTiernan or Richard Donnor before 1995 it would be a fucking classic, but either it was the 80s coke or dumb luck but he burnt out fast. Nice Guys sucks, he did the same sorta movie with Val Kilmer and Robert Downey Jr, Kiss Goodbye or w/e, it was mildly better iirc, mostly due to Val and his "faggot gun," and Black's The Predator killed the entire franchise forever, fuck Prey and Badlands jfc

The term is normalfag, "normie" is the term invented for Reddit normalfags to pass the insult along to pretend they (you) are not normalfag.
Normalfags do not know the name of any director offhand. Not even one.
Because they aren't in the movie.
If you say "Peter Jackson" or even "Raimi" they'll say "oh yeah" but they won't come up with it on their own in casual conversation. Why would they?
Maybe one of them in a group will say "James Cameron" because he put his name on Avatar posters as part of the title.

Well, you have to consider the context of production. I mean, Dances with wolves and Unforgiven were a tough acts to follow for all westerns at the time. I don´t mean it in the sense of the movie being bad but rather in the sense of freedom of exploration of the genre.

It was a beautiful time for authors full of rather unique productions like this or Dead man. Some worked out better than others but i do get what you mean. For anyone looking back with a 2025 perspective a movie with that cast couldn´t possibly have been a failure.
