Eh, idk. The whole
>new android is turning all the people into fishmen through video games!!!
seemed like a signal that they were going to drop deeper philosophical and psychological conflicts in favor of schlocky body horror bs

What was even the point of that show?

Also, I had difficulty getting past some of the dumber bits of the initial premise. Okay, a cult called the Mithraic Order get their hands on alien tech and use it to wage an extermination campaign against Earth, fair enough. But their enemies are... the fucking "Atheists"? Really? I could get them fighting a big war in the name of an *atheistic ideology,* but atheism itself? Enough that their symbol is a big "A"? And then they program their alien robot to fanatically preach milquetoast scientific rationalism that even the fucking kids they're supposed to be raising aren't even enthused by despite it being the only belief system they've ever heard. I just couldn't take Reddit the Robot seriously or that she represented a major faction of humanity that had fought a war to the death. If it was just basic Western classical liberalism like "we believe in freedom and democracy and the right of the rights of the individual to live as he or she pleases and we won't submit to a UFO cult theocracy!" that would have been way more believable and less cringe than what they actually went with.

the mithraic faith as a whole is one big grift by whatever the fuck kind of incomprehensible monster or entity or being or "signal" is broadcasting from kepler. it's all designed meticulously to make them militant, pliant, and faithful - and all the technology the mithraic scriptures actually revealed to them helped them pretty much form a oligarchic theocracy and nearly conquer the planet

once they built the necromancers - a task they're still not entirely sure even they understand - the war went fully fucked and the athiests started nuking. i'm assuming up until that fateful period in history it was just "mithraics vs the world" and after the nukes the religious vs the antireligious became the only real fight left

my guess is they were probably going full cosmic with bits of old testament scripture, adam and eve, the garden, the apple, the snake, all of those are pretty obvious metaphors they lay on you - but everything after that is up in the air

if i recall correctly they collectively find evidence that points to a similar war on kepler, with ancient mithraics fighting ancient "techists" or whatever they were called - only everyone had been on the planet so long they mutated. that, OR - kepler is the origin of mankind and they left for earth an unbelievably long time ago and the human visage is the mutation... oorrr somehow humanity has been travelling back and forth to this planet for untold millennia and fighting over it and earth when inevitably "sol" starts whispering shit in people's ear again

my only real guess is kepler is one giant egg and sol needs a very specific set of circumstances to occur in order to be hatched. it's nascent, and trapped, but is ancient enough and smart enough to broadcast some sort of signal. maybe a turbo-ancient, planet killing bioengineered weapon? maybe an alien? maybe sol, the snakes, the "signal" - all different parties?

we will literally never know. FUCK hbo

I thought the mystery planet was the original cradle of mankind, after Sol/the entity started fucking shit up some humans left for earth as refugees while the others got turned into beasts by the androids to prevent the entity from controlling their minds
