Why did he even bother making his offer to Llewelyn? In practical terms, there was virtually zero chance that the offer could have been redeemed (no pun intended). Perhaps Anton intended it that way.

Think about it. The offer was, "Give me the money, and I'll let her [your wife] go." These two guys had just been in mortal combat a few hours earlier, so they don't much like each other at this point. Even if Llewelyn cools down and accepts, how is delivery supposed to work? Anton will naturally suspect a booby trap, or an attack at a given location. The whole point is that both men have to have some awareness of a given time and place, which makes an attack highly probable.

The Big Lebowski suggests one possible answer: the aggressor commands the quarry to drive around randomly for a bit, then drop the package in a general area and keep moving. But even so, one doesn't rule out a booby trap.

The implication is also that Llewelyn is dead no matter what he does (whether by the other Mexicans or him), so why would Llewelyn even want to engage with a silly proposition. It was a bullshit offer with no reasonable way of being redeemed, even if Anton himself is too autistic to realize it.

I thought the offer was the money to be delivered and basically Llewelyn needed to surrender as well? He needed to give his own life for his wife to survive.

this
it's a literal scenario

>lay the money down right here and I will ensure I go away, taking the heat of the mexican cartel with me and your wife will be left alone
>you're going to die though

Elyn is way too optimistic, the mexican cartel already were following the mother/wife.
They kept them alive because Elyn would go to them eventually.
If Elyn didn't they would torture the wife to draw him out.

Nah they already scouted her, they knew exactly what bus, etc
they were scouting all exits out of the cities looking for an old woman/young woman matching that description.
gotta remember the amount of money they are talking about was enough to pay every mexican in the state ten times over to get the money back.

the only reason the mother/wife weren't taken immediately is they wanted everything to seem natural so that "Lew" would eventually go to them. Which is where the cartel would get him and the money.
