I feel like they greenlit it assuming they'd get more Fraiser and Cheers cast members back and by the time they discovered no one was interested the wheels were turning and they couldn't can the project so they had to push forward

It's performed just as broadly as the original show, but there's less room for culture, it's like it's become more like a New Yorker cartoon set in Boston. The better part of the show leaned more into Dramedy which was probably gained by ditching the radio show aspect where dramas were very contained. The original show was functioning at full force in the first or second season either though.
