He has all the subtlety of a sledgehammer. I think Nolan is an okay filmmaker but how the fuck did he get put on such a pedestal? His films aren't remotely deep or complex like is often suggested and he's just downright lazy with some of directing habits and his films universally have the worst sound editing I've ever come across.
I don't hate him but he does not deserve to be idolised amongst filmmakers, his filmography isn't anything extraordinary.

I think he accidentally struck gold with the dark knight and inception. Inception is too similar to paprika to give him full credit too.

Nolan's older brother was using the pseudonym Oppenheimer when committing contract killing jobs in Costa Rica as early as 2006 and only avoided consequences because Chris Nolan lobbied the court against extradition.
The entire movie is just one big cope on Nolan's side to make everyone forget, since now googling "Nolan Oppenheimer" shows the movie and not those news articles.

This. I place him around Roland emmerich tier. Except Emmerich understands he's making fun blockbuster slop whereas Nolan oversteps and gets up his own ass or just seemingly gets bored with his own movies.

Because as you say he hammers you over the head with his imagery and especially dialogue which allows dummies to engage his films beyond the most surface levels of "wow that was a big explosion" or "omg he was the bad guy all along." His need to overexplain everything to death drives me up a fucking wall but I can't even blame him because when you don't you have situations where 90% of the viewer base doesn't even understand the surface level plot of the film let alone any of the themes or subtext once all is said and done.

He was already the new golden boy with Memento (his best and still just okay), that's why every film after that had to have a "deep cool twist".

Lolno, Villeneuve isn't really pretentious. He makes straightforward movies and is competent at it.
Nolan relies on gimmicks and highbrow concepts that he isn't capable of delivering.

Why do you think people constantly try to appear more intelligent than others? That's the higher status they're trying to achieve. You basically agreed with the argument without realizing it.

Midwits believe that appearing more intelligent will grant them this higher station, that's the point.
