1. They didn't have a scene where he's putting on an obvious act (also no Aegon calling it a "Good Beginning" which would have been kino, and also foreshadowed blood and cheese, but htey fucked that too so)
2. They did include him talking to the prostitute about being regretful, which I thought was good, and showed they understood the nuance, only to kick me in the balls by undoing all the effort anyway by, as you said, making him le evil villain
In season 1 Aegon offers him the throne and he refuses to take it even though he's tempted, because he has a weird retarded sense of honor or whatever you want to call it. He wouldn't burn his brother. MAYBE arrive a bit late to help. That's all they needed to do.
The families are a bigger threat to their own team than their enemies, it's so annoying. It would be so much more interesting not to do that
