It's a slav thing. The generation that went through WW2 hunger barely ate anything but the bread rations, so they started to worship the bread and hardwired the next generations to think the same. For example you'll piss off any babushka if you eat a soup without some bread.

desu I expected Russian grocers to be total shitholes with canned/jarred everything. It's got everything and in abundance, plenty of fresh food and it's reasonably priced. It's a bit of a surprise when you expect it to be an under-developed and poverty-stricken shithole and yet the fuckers are eating better than most westerners and for less. What's gone wrong here?
