At the time of release (maybe it's still so) the Wikipedia article stated the creators mentioned two crimes as inspiration -- one by a black teen and one by a younger boy whose details weren't released. The "it's not based on a real case" defense is flimsy at best when the story self-admittedly lifts many of its details from a black kid and applies them to a conspicuously white and normal one.
