Joaquin Phoenix doesnโ€™t get enough blame for this movie. Lady Gaga said he would literally rip up scenes and start over from scratch in his trailer, dictating even the dialogue. Somehow he has escaped the blame though and Todd Phillips is the one ostracized.

I don't think it was awful but it wasn't good. Reappraisals will probably be "it isn't as bad as we thought" but it will never be considered good.

You prove the entire point that the first film and its sequel both made: you don't care about Arthur or his mental health struggles (again, which was the entire point of the first film), you just wanted to see le whacky clown kill people. As soon as he stopped doing that you got mad at him.

The pretty explicit message of the first film is that no one gives a shit about the poor and downtrodden in society. This results in lowered investment in social services.
When it inevitably results in a situation like Joker killing DeNiro, suddenly everyone pretends that they really care. But they don't. They just like the spectacle. Meanwhile the media just politicises the event to get people riled up because that's easier than looking at the actual issues at play.

Everyone missed this. So the sequel was pretty explicit about how no one understood that message or cared about Arthur unless he was being the insane clown that society had pushed him to be, wanting him to be their mascot for a revolution. The point still being that he was a mentally ill man who society had trodden all over. People again completely missed this message and whined that he didn't kill enough people.

Thomas acted like a dick. You can say that he didn't deserve to die just for that, as if there's any objective metric on what makes someone worthy of death. But he wasn't the supervillain Arthur pictured in his mind, no.

Ehh. He got laid. He found internal peace. He confronted his demons.
I wouldn't call it torture porn. Bittersweet. The ending was frustrating because I wanted him to be able to just relax now. And I wanted him to get justice for the way society destroyed him in the first place. It would've felt sappy if that had happened though, betraying the films' tone.

It's insane that he doesn't hurt a single person in the sequel. If the first movie portrayed him as an anti-hero then the second straight up turns him into a hero through redemption.

The sheer amount of clarity he displays through the movie despite his condition and the regret for his actions makes him much more sympathetic than when he lashed out. He pays because of it but he dies as Arthur not Joker.

People are so braindead that they think the rape somehow corrected him into not being the Joker.

It was the realization that being Joker hurts his friends. Gary is traumatized and scared of Arthur, his other only friend was killed because of him. Arthur is a good and caring person let down by the system.

imagine if they made it like King of Comedy, Joker gets out of jail a free man on a technicality, then because he is famous he gets a TV show with Lady Gaga, where he uses it like the right wing media does, to foment stochastic terrorism legally.

Joker 2 is about circles of violence, the director discussed this in an interview.
The biggest issue is that the movie was released during peak culture wars (2024) and everyone from both sides projected their politics into it.
>noooo le joker was supposed to be a revolutionary! Muh Luigi!
>nooooo the movie is mocking le incels!

The message of the movie is that just because you're abused, it doesn't make it right to become a monster. Arthur saves his soul by owning up to what he did. The darkness of the joker persona spreads to others, like a virus. This is a story of Arthur's dark passenger becoming bigger than he is.
