Show was making shit up as they went. CSM wasn’t even suppose to be a reoccurring villain. They got him just to be some creepy government guy smoking in the corner. But main writers went on early message boards and saw people were interested in him so he was brought back and given lines. They had no idea he was a veteran state actor and could actually act. Season 1: Gritty 90s show about hunting down murderous perverts while dealing with an international conspiracy. Strong religious themes as Frank confronts evil. Very good.
Season 2: Later X-Files seasons but Bible themed. The original pitch of a show focused on hunting psycho-killers is replaced by funny demons in rubber masks and a heavier dose of the conspiracy. Much lighter in tone. It was fine, but not as good as season 1 imo.
Season 3: Ruins the ending of the second season. It's watchable, but it was the last season for a reason.

As a Star Trek fan, I feel that Half-Life really has a Star Trek vibe. I know it's based on Quake, sharing a similar premise—a teleportation experiment that leads to disaster and an invasion of Lovecraftian monsters and aliens, respectively—but Star Trek also featured teleportation. Both the Strogg and the Combine are reminiscent of the Borg. The G-Man himself is very similar to Q, though he's also clearly inspired by the Cigarette Smoking Man, who is one of the greatest characters in fiction.
