I realize now that nostalgia is a dirty little trick. I hated this movie. I hate this movie. And yet, I mourn for the days watching it over today's horse shit. I look upon it favorably because of how bad things are now.

You must understand, those of you that have become infected, I cannot allow you to leave. Just one bite, one scratch from these creatures is sufficient, and then? you become one of them.

If I was a trained soldier, and I was sent into an undeground research facility with a homicidal child AI, I simply would not walk into a hallway with reinforced doors on both ends, knowing full well it could be a deadly trap.

In the original screenplay, the infiltration team was being led by the White Queen, who was launching a cyber-attack against the Red Queen throughout the film, causing power fluctuations and the gradual degradation of the Red Queen's functionality. She began to freeze up, reboot, and forget things like the true layout of the Hive. Eventually she "died", but gave Alice all the digits to the exit door except one. (There was a Minotaur parallel originally where the creature was stalking her through a maze of corridors.) At the end of the film, the White Queen freed Alice from the all-white interrogation room with the viewpoint high up on the wall (this idea reappeared in Retribution) and apologized for fucking up. The Red Queen was right, the containment was breached, now everyone is dead. The original ending was a lot more downbeat than the one we got. But the more nuanced and sympathetic Red Queen is something I wish had been kept. In the original script she's trying her best despite something being very wrong.

The Red Queen was 16 in the script. Paul replaced her with a child because he'd just made the TV movie "The Sight" with a child actress playing "Alice", and thought she'd be good in the role.

He was worried that people would think we was a nonce for having a child say lines like, "I've been a bad, bad girl."

Also, Sony pressured him to overdub the Red Queen with an American accent, but he (and Milla) pushed back against it.

I always thought it was weird that they would entrust an entire facility to an insane homicidal AI, but just chalked it up to Umbrella being Umbrella.

I hate how the later films turned The Red Queen into a walking meme who existed to SAY THE LINE. The White Queen was a more interesting character and the RQ should have stayed dead.

The quality does wobble in later films, but I've always rejected the notion that each film is worse than the last because there's absolutely ups and downs in quality.

They're very enjoyable movies, they were made with a lot of passion, and while critics hating them is sorta expected, nerds have spent 20+ years seething about the fact that they're paradoxically a lot like the games but also different to the games. At the end of the day, it seems like they couldn't handle the fact that the films introduced their own main character and pivoted more into action. The problem I have is that the films are absolutely better written than the games. The dialogue quality is far, far higher. For years, nerds have been trying to claim that a game series famous for its awful, so-bad-its-good writing quality is actually better written than the films that loosely adapted it. It's peak delusion, and they can't be dissuaded from it. There's this frustrating "bitch eating crackers" energy where people aren't actually mad about any specific thing in the later movies because a lot of the plot ideas are pretty similar, especially in RE4-6. And RE7. And RE: Village. And Revelations 2. And RE9. They're just seething that it's Alice doing those things instead of one of their pet characters.

4 has a fantastic opening, and some great Kurt Wimmer stylings. 5 is mangled and we never got the director's cut, but it's a very good looking movie with great ideas and great action. 6 is a rehash of 3, but it has an interesting bleak tone, and it dials back the whole superhero aspect. It's dark, gritty, and wants to be Alien 3.

Practically every cool and awesome thing about Resident Evil was invented by Anderson or his crew. That's one of the reasons why "faithful" adaptations are so lame.

They're not just better written than the games. They're a lot better written than the George Romero movies that inspired both the RE games and films.

They should remaster the movies and let Paul tweak them to improve the continuity and fix the CG. There's also a director's cut of 5 that he wanted to release but Screen Gems wouldn't let him.
