From the book:
> It would indeed be a betrayal, if we all left him, ' said Aragorn. 'But if he goes east, then all need not go with him; nor do I think that all should. That venture is desperate: as much so for eight as for three or two, or one alone. If you would let me choose, then I should appoint three companions: Sam, who could not bear it otherwise; and Gimli; and myself.'
So Aragon considered him one of the top guys in the fellowship. So maybe he could have done better than most. But book Gimli is a warrior poet. Movie Gimli is comic relief.

the dwarfs unironically were probably the best choices for the ring. They were immune to corrupting magic and Sauron's rings had no effect on them.

Everyone else who commented was wrong. They weren't immune to the rings given to them, but that they were made by the god of autism himself, and it just magnified that.

the books really don't have much for gimli and legolegs to do outside of a few asides here and there. Lorien, fangorn, the glittering caves, and catching merry and pippin up on everything that happend after they all meet up again at the grey council.
I don't like that they became comic relief, but if they didn't do something they'd just be standing around in the background even more than they do.

Nah. Sauron was on the verge of winning the war regardless of the ring. Even after all those lost battles Sauron still had a huge army behind the black gates.
And even if Gimli took the ring, he would have lost it eventually in an underground skirmish or ambush , and it would still get back to Sauron .Or try to hide it , and Sauron would still win the war thanks to his numerous army.
LOTR isn't an hack and slash adventure film , is a Mission Impossible film lmao

Only a maiar like Gandalf or first gen elf like Galadriel would become analogous to Sauron in power

They fall to the darkness of the ring before even getting close to Mordor, probably try to claim the ring for their own, get mobbed my an unending swarm of orcs until they finally die, and the ring is returned to Sauron

Dwarves don't turn into wraiths. He'd 100% just turn into a greedy despot just like what happened with the other dwarves who had the lesser rings of power, until Sauron builds up enough forces to take out his fortress and reclaim the ring. If another dragon doesn't get attracted by the massive hoard amassed by Gimli and does the job for Sauron.

Gimli is a "dwarven lord" by birthright, you retard. He's not some random peasant fodder, he's aristocracy just like everyone else in the fellowship except for Sam.

Frodo - landed gentry
Merry and Pippin - landed gentry
Sam - inherits the role of gardener just because his dad is Frodo's gardener, typical of commoners working for landed gentry
Boromir - firstborn of the leader of Gondor, whose family have ruled for centuries
Aragorn - son of arathorn blah blah
Legolas - son of the king of the wood elves
Gimli - son of Gloin, one of the leaders of the mine retaken from Smaug, which makes him a lord.

Sam being the only commoner among them plays a vital role in the story.

Gimli is descended from Durin himself and his father is a current lord of Lonely Mountain so it's not just an empty 23AndMe claim, but somehow he can't be classified as a dwarven lord because... In your head it's a title that's given based on power levels? If that's the case then Gimli immediately trying to destroy the ring shows off his power level as greater than the rest, definitely making him a lord.

And this is already assuming that regular dwarves can be turned into wraiths by the rings of power, which I don't think is true either. If Sauron could control regular dwarves with the rings of power and turn them into wraiths like the kings of men then he wouldn't have taken back all the rings, he would have just given them out to lesser dwarves to make them his minions instead of the ones he initially gave them to. All dwarves simply have a higher resistance and only got greedy from using them.
