It was dropped from the adaptation, but there's a bit where Liu Bei stays at this woodsman's house during a famine. So he kills his wife so he can feed his guest meat. When he discovers this, he's moved by the man's devotion. So he writes Cao Cao about it, and Cao Cao sends him a sack of gold.
