Aaahhh, "A Song of Ice and Fire". Thrilling book series. Shame George RR Martin wasn't a faster writer.

I wonder what the attitude to GRRM is like in some timeline where he had finished the books or in which the show did not go the way it did. I suppose for the books it depends on what he does - may just be that the timeline where he did finish them everyone says they are shit and he rushed them.

That is assuming there is not a massive drop in quality with the last 2 books. GRRM has lost interest in finishing the series and is barely if at all working on it sure, but part of that is probably down to having found it too difficult to finish. A GRRM that just goes fuck it and puts something out to complete the series so he can move on does not seem like it would have the same standard there.

not really, its because its too much work and he is a fat old richman. He can't untangle Danny from her plot and move her to Westeros, his world is too big now and he is a hack. It would take him at least 5 more books and he knows it.

Do you know how many diners meals would that fat fuck have to miss in order to write 5 books? Why would you write something when you earn money by doing nothing? It's what differentiates a hack from an artist. The artist is plagued by his creation, literally obsessed and suffering to complete it. Would get drunk, take drugs, shrroms, anything just to get inspired . He would stop eating and sleeping cause all he needs is to express his creativity. It's what compels him and gives him dopamine. He would seclude and exclude friends from his life just so he could create.

GRRM is not that.

In the 00's he would always taunt fans by saying his assistant would destroy his notes if he died. But I imagine HBO put the kibosh on that as part of the deal to adapt it.

>>211785432

Sanderson's work is mid YA type fodder. He's only popular because autists like that he explains how the magic works and literally beats you over the head with the message of the story instead of trusting the reading to suss out obvious symbolism and themes.

I'm honestly not sure how to feel about that.

Magic being mysterious and there being horrible side effects to breaking the laws of nature is cool.

But I can see the other side of the argument too. With any kind of special powers you have to give the reader/watcher a clear understanding of their limits. And then ideally the hero uses them in an unexpected way. So the reader/viewers thinks "wow, I should have thought of that" instead of being annoyed you just pulled a deus ex machina out of your ass.

And that is exactly the problem with asoaif, which fed into the show too. Dragons go from bring invincible I win button to being one shotted by some random Dornish peasant. The Night King is completely invincible one second and is then effortlessly shanked in the next scene. The 'keeping things mysterious' approach really only works in Horror, because the protagonists are fucked anyway.

>The 'keeping things mysterious' approach really only works in Horror,
Nah. The reason why the Taken in Black Company (at least in the first ones) books were cool because they were mysterious, kind of crazy sometimes and you didn't know, not really, what they were capable, beyond that they are powerful.

They weren't even losing, they could have just turtled up in the Riverlands and Lannisters couldn't do much. And if Vale joined in then it would have been even easier.
But desu, realistically I think they would have needed bigger support to assassinate/overthrow Robb. I would say there were too many Stark supporters, and only thing that sort of kind of counteracts this is that they thought that Bran and Rickon are dead, and realistically they (the boys) likely would have been a rallying banner for any important Northern lords soon after they escaped.

I liked the first book a lot, and some of the others were ok too. Later ones have cool moments, but overall I didn't like them as much, as characters changed and so on.
It's different than GoT in style and focused on merc life, not court intrigue, but on the other hand it's also gritty and in some ways low magic, but not as low as GoT in many ways. Just don't expect Sanderson's magic systems, the narrator/protagonist merc is not some wizard and he doesn't know how that shit works most of the time.

I couldn't tell you, I dropped WoT on the first book, but I would say they are just different, WoT seems to lean more into epic fantasy, more Tolkien style, at least that was my impression. While Black Company is more gritty and down to earth, there is way less worldbuilding, it's more about characters and what's happening around the narrator.
