This opinion floated around by people, I saw Sam Hyde and Carrol talking about it, like the movie specifically was psyoped to make Joker from some sort of class struggle symbol in to a raped broken bitch, but I think people just missed the point completely, Arthur was never conscious revolutionary, he just sperged out, he was of his meds and life just broken him completely. He wanted to blow his brains out first in his apartment, then right on the show, but in the moment lashed out, killed a bunch of people, thats why he can't keep the joker facade, he was never that guy, he is ashamed of what he did, dwarf called him out and he conceded. Last hope, he latched on that crazy groupie, but she was after Joker, not broken schizo Arthur and thats why he dies silently, welcoming death, because thats what he always wanted. Very good movie, music and performance is on top, Its not your average capeshit, on the level of the first spider-man and dark knight movies, will be a classic.

Would be good if that was sincere, but we all know Todd wanted exclusively to shit on the people that the first one resonated with. It didn't need a sequel to begin with. It never needed to be Batman related either, that was shoehorned to get more people to see it. Funnily enough any lingering plot from that shit is completely gone in the second. They even gutted Harley and turned her into a gross smelly creature. Gaga is horrendously ugly and her acting is fucking terrible. Making it a musical that goes nowhere was part of the choice to actively shit on anyone who liked the first movie. Contrarian posters will say it was good, but it wasn't worth anyone's time.
