if you want a real idea why then I believe it was the creatures egg laying ground and it was puzzled to see why there were strange "buildings" where it lays its eggs. probably thought the statue was a lifeform so attacked it

Fun Trivia: The Cloverfield monster has extra mouths on the tips of its second pair of arms. There was originally going to be a scene where Clover vacuums people up with these appendages but it was cut.
