I disagree. It wasn't engaging at all because you didn't care about the characters. The MC was horrible. You didn't know what was going on until the last part of the movie because there was no context to any of the scenes. Stuff was happening but you don't know why the characters were doing what they were doing. Nolan just wanted it to look cool and confuse you. At the end it was just pointless.

Same.
Kenneth brannagh was a fucking horid casting choice as well, his entire shtick as a villain was shit, his accent was terrible and the whole romance revenge shitty subplot bogged the movie down.
Other than that though the premise was great.
We never got to see the future time criminals or know who they are though which is stupid. Brannagh as the villain was just the middle man, its stupid.

I think you might be a bit of a brainlet.
It was a subtext of the main character going through the timeline, then in the middle of the movie coming back through the reversed timeline and slowly realizing he was the instigator of his own creation.
It wasn't outright told to the viewer but was shown to us as the main character was going through the events he had already been through, but inverted.

>The MC was horrible
MC was absolute garbage
>You didn't know what was going on
which is precisely what kept me engaged
>Stuff was happening but you don't know why the characters were doing what they were doing
i did when i managed to understand the time inversion thing, especially towards the end of the movie (after the 4th rewatch)

>>211795338
final battle was against the villain's henchmen who were doing the bidding of the future to procure/activate the algorithm
it could've been directed better overall i agree, but the thing is the whole concept of time inversion quickly makes things impossible to understand
shit wasn't clear because as the red team (forward) entered the battlefield the blue team (inverted) was leaving, but in forward time it looked like they were also entering in moonwalk
you probably missed the fact that Neil who was supposed to be on the blue team (inverted) switched teams mid-battle to warn MC about the trapped tunnel, and he's actually the one driving the humvee we see at some point without understanding, and he gets locked out because of the trapped tunnel collapsing yet he still manages to pull them out and save them
ironic thing is that because he uninverted to be able to save MC from the trap, he didn't go back with team blue to brief team red about what happens, which means that team red is oblivious to the trapped tunnel, which means that blue Neil needs to uninvert to warn them... so causality gets kinda whacky
the same attention to detail was given to the airport scene where you can actually see inverted Neil and MC taking the chick to the time inverter

You are saying it was all pointless and you didnt know what was happening until the end but it was all laid out and told to the viewer.
Basically a time bomb from the future was sent back through time, inverted and the villain was dying so wanted to an hero with the entire timeline with him. Which admittedly was pretty gay but that was what the MC was doing, finding the pieces of the bomb, but he didnt know that until like mid way through the movie and we as the viewer found out when he did, then the plot works on the previous events that unfolded but via inversion.
Its relatively straight forward and not overly smart apart from say the final shootout and I suppose the car chases but I dont care for car shit myself, I hate them in movies.
The only thing that didnt make sense was letting robert pattinson die, because they essentially have infinite time as they can go back and forward through time they could have just figured a way to change the events unfold.

It really is just nonsense. I can't even call it pretentious, it's like Nolan had a weird dream once and decided to write a script about it and tried to have it make sense but it just doesn't make any sense. The battle at the end makes no sense, it really feels like something your brain would come up with during a dream.

I am the anon you first replied to. The performance was terrible, and brannagh is normally great, he was just a very poor casting in this and his accent was horrible.
The character was shit too, they could have done the whole future boogeyman enemy without some emo tier villain in the present, but I suppose the viewer needs an enemy who is pulling strings and having 1 enemy employing goons that we can see makes more sense than countless goons all employed by the future enemy boogeyman that we never see.
The female and he shitty children and husband/wife drama was completely unnecessary and just fucking ruins the movie completely.

they are trying to prevent the algorithm from being buried by a bomb so it can be recovered in the future, but really it's just cover so that they can secretly remove the algorithm before the bomb blows up so that sator thinks it's mission accomplished and they can hide the pieces so the future can't find it. no one knows about the real objective besides 3 of the tenet forces who promise to kill themselves later after they hide the pieces of the algorithm.

im not familiar with his other works
and i agree that the character was a low effort white devil villain, but i think the actor did a decent enough job, what do you think would have improved the performance ?

>>211797299
it's just a mcguffin that doesnt do anything in the movie except give motivation for the characters to fight over
i agree that it could have been fleshed out in a better way but i see the movie more as a narrative exercise (with the time inversion thing) than an actual attempt at a compelling story with deep world building

>>211798225
Neil is a weak spot in the narrative, i would've loved for him to be his own character instead of the product of the unnecessary cuckshit subblot
for the movie to make sense we'd have to assume Neil spent entire years reversing through time and pulling gigs like the first opera scene to further the goals of the tenet organisation
which would be a nightmare of logistics (uninterrupted supply line of inverted tanks, transportation, weapons etc) when you think about it

They would meet in the past, but in relative terms the black guys future.
So essentially when neil first met the black guy in the movie, he already knew what was gonna happen, what he needed to do and probably that he knew he was gonna die there, because the black guy travelled back in time way before they met in the movie and told him the deal.
Its quite clever really as we the viewer know nothing about that until literally right at the end of the movie where he kills the indian woman and it comes apparent he was the one who set up the whole tenet operation himself. Like he was employing himself in a paradox.
That is about the only cool sci fi part with the entire movie.

Time travel is impossible. Time is not a physical characteristic of the universe but a system of measurement. There is no "time' and there is no magic record of every movement every atom has ever taken in since it began to exist and nothing can compel matter to "rewind" and go back along this imaginary record of every point in space it has ever been in.

>because the black guy travelled back in time way before they met in the movie and told him the deal
the protag didn't need to travel back in time
let's say protag and Neil met a T0, and that the final battle happened at T+1
years into the future, Protag forms up TENET and recruits Neil, say at T+10
then he tills him everything and inverts him, sending him into the past until he reaches the opening scene at the opera at T-1
Neil uninverts himself and a few weeks/months later meets a clueless Protag in a hotel hall, at T0
he has knowledge of everything
so later at T+1 during the final battle he knows everything

Protag only needs to move forward in time, it is Neils who needed to move backwards
which is why many theorize that Neil is actually the little Max when he's all grown up

Nothing even remotely hints at that, they just put the subplot in so Nolan could have a female supporting character and the "villain" could have some kind of motivation besides just that he's dying, or he'd have nothing to lose at all.

Michael caine is actually ives
Protag is using antagonist to find and group the weapon
The people in the future tried to get it from the scientist but she sent it back in pieces but the inversion wore off. Future protag knew this would happen and inverted himself all the way back to the movie. He's actually "sending" messages and gold back. The future people think someone found it and wrote about turning it on which he did

The entire fight and battle is a cover created by the protag

Everything about the way his dialogue and arc is written is a one-dimensional, irrational evil villain.
He fundamentally doesn't need to exist and the antagonist could be unseen future-jannies planting nukes they need to disarm. But Chris, clever boy that he is, read the filmmaking manual for dummies and it said that a film needs humans at the core of it's story.
So, like Interstellar, he tacked on a bullshit emotional story to an otherwise fine high concept sci fi film.

Like he tries to make a 2deep4u IMAX movie so one time cinema going normies are like "WOW that was cool" not really understanding the story and how simple it is but made unnecessarily complicated for the sake of the WOW 2deep4u aspect.
So he makes it all bland to not complicate the average retard.
Plus I guess the average morons like guns, carts titts and ass not deep hard sci fi or really imaginative concepts.
You probably know too that apparently inception is a rip off of paprika (anime) though I have never watched paprika myself so cant say.

Anyway I dont rate nolan that high as a diretcor and I expect odyssey to be a DEI riddled PoS. I probably wont even watch it as it has a tranny in it and god knows what he is gonna make that freak as.

Despite james cameron really fucking up the last avatar movie, which was pretty shit, he himself has cool and unique ideas that he doesnt mind going deep into imaginative sci fi. Even if the story of the 1st avatar was a copy paste of pocahontis or dancing with wolves.
I prefer james cameran over nolan.

Max isn't anything more than a symbol of "posterity" and "preserving the world for the future generation" that was the overall (hamfisted) message of the film. It was a cool idea but it went full retard, I didn't care about any of these fucking shitty characters and it had pretty much no impact because of it. Time travel's the hardest thing to do and the reverse time fights' spectacle was good (on top of a great soundtrack). It's Bourne + Primer, the legibility of parsing the timelines and what's going on is for repeat viewings but isn't at all necessary. Kat's the Chief, not the Jeet.

Tenet should have a sequel that's an inversion of the first film where protag was the fish out of water and Neil was the one who knew more. But in this one Neil (the one who meets the protagonist for the first time) is the one getting strung along by him as they set everything up to lead back to the first film. Make it a sequel and prequel simultaneously and come full circle.

Legitimately one of the worst big budget movies I've ever seen. There are plenty of nonsense plots out there, so that's not the deal breaker here. It's everything that it should have had to redeem it that failed. The performances, characters, and pacing are objectively terrible. OK, I can get past that even. The one thing it should have at least had was great action, interesting set pieces, and fun moments. It doesn't deliver on any of it. The 'action' is trash, the concept completely wasted, and the ending puts one big "you wasted your fucking time" bow on top of it all. Promising some crazy ass 'temporal pincer' maneuver all out battle, and we get glorified test footage of people running around doing jack shit. This failure should have just been written off as a tax deduction.

It made sense the first time through.
The movie itself isn't really deep or complex, it just has a needlessly messy time travel gimmick that pretends to add some depth.
Its also a bad sign in your self-serious sci-fi action adventure movie when you have the basil exposition scene from austin powers where they stare right at the audience and say "Don't think about it too hard" while also making the intricacy of the dumb drawkcab gimmick a main plot point.
Just seems like nolan trying to eat his cake and have it to.
The script really needed a second draft, or someone else who wasn't Nolan's brother to give some feedback.

No he fucking didn't. I wanted to like his character but I just couldn't, everything was tainted by how fucking badly executed this movie was. Again, good concept, but a huge waste. Should've paired Pattinson with someone else. He worked well as the "knower" of the two, but the movie really should've stopped halfway and done his perspective, or planned for a sequel where you get his pov. Instead it feels half baked and everything crammed into one film. No, it's not necessary to understand it, but we didn't need the fucking whore and her kid subplot at all. Neat idea, god awful execution.

Here's the one thing I didn't understand. At the very beginning, there is a bullet hole in the concrete step, and the inverted guy slurps the bullet out with his time gun. That's fair enough, but at what point in time did that bullet appear in the concrete on the normal time line? Like, did the architects of the building place it there when they built it and nobody touched it until the time guy slurped it with his gun?

Not that anon but I like when you have a character that is the protagonist in their own story that is just intersecting the main plot. You don't really NEED to see their movie.
Sort of like Han Solo (explicitly from ANH). He gets a cool into, he's a slick as fuck slimeball with a beat up grand national parked out back who's gotten into a million scrapes and adventures, and Luke's journey being the primary focus of the movie, is just another episode in the ongoing stories of Han Solo. As the movies go on they come up with more reasons why he loses his agency and begins to orbit the through line.
Its kind of funny han stuck around as long as he did since Ford never wanted to do it in the first place, and Lucas didn't intend for him to come back in his original treatment for the sequel to ANH which has been novelized and turned into a comic also luke and leia weren't siblings, and vader wasn't luke's dad.

Yeah I can appreciate that kind of storytelling, but it just wasn't done well here. TP was barely a presence, we followed him around because we were forced to. Zero charisma. I know, muh blank slate muh CIA muh doesn't exist, but it's just not the right type of film for that. That shit works fine when you're not playing with physics at the same time, but having a main character who just basically doesn't exist? Oh wait, he has a line about hot sauce that became a meme for how ridiculous it was. Yeha, nobody cared about him. Everyone wanted more RP and it was just as much his story, hell, even moreso. The movie was also pretty predictable, even though it's trying to fuck with you, it was very easy to figure out the black soldier was just TP going backwards. The movie had too many extraneous details.

Huge stretch, never stated to be his name, and when it is an extended name it's Maximilian with an a. Then there's the idea of sitting in a shipping crate for years so he can age up just to be the proper age of Pattinson. Then there's the absolute zero interaction with or care about the whore who would be his mother in this pathetic fan theory. Sorry, I don't buy it, the movie isn't that deep. If that was actually Nolan's intent he did a very poor job at supporting it.

I think I was arguing the point more than defending the movie, I don't think its all bad, but nolan really gets stuck up his own ass sometimes. I think inception and its reception is where he just dove in head first.
I liked inception, but I feel like it went over everyone's heads because "WHOA DIFFERENT TIME SIGNATURES!" and the top spinning at the end.
Everyone rightly picked up on the influence of paprika, but don't realize paprika isn't really a movie about dreams, but about film-as-dream (the whole climax is the detective remembering and assimilating the memory of him and his friend dreaming to be film makers, and the abandoned film they never finished because real life got in the way, a real like that was inspired by this dream of a film.
Inception isn't about a guy making a dream heist to save his kids, its about nolan making a movie about a dream he had about a guy making a dream heist to save his kids.
Its about the inception of the idea and how it goes from that first spark of inspiration to the finished product.

Yes, Inception was both better executed and more coherent. The people jerking off Tenet really need to stop huffing Nolan's farts. No, it doesn't get any better on rewatch, it's the same shit film with 2 cool set pieces. The third act shits itself hard, it doesn't matter how bad they want to defend it. Nolan has gone from making interesting films to just being the ideas guy who needs someone to audit his nonsense before it actually gets approved.

It just doesn't accomplish anything, it's so confusing to me that they shot that and kept it in like it conveys some sort of information. Were there bad guys in there? It looked empty so what was the point of the multiple explosion? It's like if you took the rotating set in Inception but just showed it on its own without anyone in it. Ok the room is spinning, cool I guess?

So we go from "nothing hints at that" to it being a stretch
Here are some additional stretches:
- Neil drinks vodka, like his mom
- Neil has a British accent, like his mom
- Neil understands Estonian, like his dad
- Kat tells the Protag he dresses like he wants to look like a billionaire, which is true he is an eyesore, whereas Neil is effortlessly classy throughout the movie (it's almost as if he actually grew up rich)

I love this movie. Not Nolan's best but I saw it alone in theaters twice during the pandemic and thought it was fantastic. I'll never understand the hate. I thought John David Washington was fine or at least somewhat awkward in a good way. I think it helped that I had already seen him in BlacKkKlansman with Adam Driver and I liked that so it wasn't jarring like it was for most folks who probably saw him act for the first time in Tenet. The plot was not hard to follow and felt satisfying enough by the end despite the third act dragging with Brannaugh droning on and the forces clashing feeling contrived. Despite the third act I enjoyed how original the movie was and Pattinson's performance and the score. Again it's not Nolan's best, not even Top 5 but it doesn't deserve all the hate. I think most people just didn't give it a proper chance, watching it at home with their phones next to them after reading all the comments and threads about the movie etc.

The reason so much happens off-screen or relies on conversations that happened off-screen is that it's elliptical storytelling in aid of an emotional and experiential effect. It mirrors the partial information real-world idealogues and fighters form their convictions based upon, just as the moral relativism of the movie's conflict (the future people are literally just trying to escape climate shit the MC's generation - ours - are responsible for) reflects the moral relativism of real-life geopolitical conflicts.

In a way Nolan's suggesting an absurdist cosmology and seems to hold Blakean humanist values within that, some sentimental streak along the lines of "maybe we live in a chaotic uncaring universe but the feelings we feel and the experiences we have as humans still matter" etc., same in Interstellar, pretty standard for his place and time culturally + being an artist, like the "a more beautiful fiction is more important than the truth" aspect in the Dark Knight flicks or Inception..

Like Oppenheimer coming out at the moment it did is to do with Nolan looking ahead at the human qualities that may lead to our doom, Tenet is at least partly a depiction of his perspective on the shape of conflict to come in our lifetimes as well as being intended as a fun action/thriller flick.

You can say it's messy and his directorial style has flaws or that it doesn't work at all in practice, but the way you zoomers complain about the unconventional aspects of the storytelling in this film measuring it against a more standard narrative template shows you lack the basic emotional intelligence to understand the basics of what you're watching and it's terrifying to me. I don't count on any of you lot making art that is any better than Tenet.

Yea clearly a generational thing. Past generations always accepted non conventional storytelling presented on film without criticism or rejection.

>I don't count on any of you lot making art that is any better than Tenet.
Yes, unlike your generation in which every individual who criticizes a piece of art has demonstrated they are more than capable of replicating similar works.

I get what he was going for, he certainly seems to like playing around with the idea of time, but the whole concept fell flat.
