The humour is very dated. If you don't know (or care) who Kareem Abdul Jabbar is, you would have a problem finding his cameo funny in & of itself. Same with Reggie Jackson in Naked Gun.

Airplane and the Naked Gun movies require you pay attention to get most of the humor/slap stick and a tiny bit of popular culture
Sadly most people can't watch movie with out a phone or yapping. And to be fair some of the references might go over people's head since pop cultural osmosis is pretty much dead since a lot of old media isn't circulated around enough for people of a certain age to get things.

I rented this from Blockbuster in the mid 2000s and watched it on a portable DVD player (or it might've been my OG Xbox with the DVD add-on, don't remember) but it was awesome. I'd say you don't really need to understand the cultural references to enjoy the movie. Most people don't even know this is practically a shot-for-shot remake of an airplane disaster movie that took itself seriously.
