it's easy to abstractly kill yourself through what amount to benign actions than to stare down 10 stories and jump. most alcoholics don't have the balls to quit drinking and they certainly don't have the balls to actually directly kill themselves.

Because he didn't want to die he just gave up. It's a nuanced decision that leads to the same place. Think of it more like taking your hands off the wheel versus intentionally driving into a tree.
