Funny you mention that falling zombie, because one of the soldiers proceeds to stand there watching his comrades being chewed and doing nothing for a bizarre amount of time. Enough time that the group chasing them would have caught up with him actually. That entire sequence with the soldiers had multiple instances of lazy writing

Low ranking sailors are trained in marksmanship, hence their access to automatic firearms. This isn't minmaxxing, you're just characterizing it like that in a dishonest attempt to frame the scene in a way that justifies it. It requires no leaps in logic or assumptions to expect armed soldiers to be able to shoot like 12 zombies. It would not be difficult
