He already killed children and civilians in the previous movie and an unarmed prisoner in this one and it's just generally not that big of a deal at this point

The audience is already familiar with the character as somebody who blows up entire planets. If that's what he ends up becoming, then of course he's capable of this. It isn't a surprising scene at all, the problem is it feels like he skips a few steps on his journey to the dark side.

At the time I didn't even think of them as children because they were named 'younglings'. It isn't as shocking when younglings are murdered, because they're not children, they're younglings you see.
