This is the thing. When I saw the movie, I have zero insights to the different types of German accents. To me, it just sounded like he was speaking German. There were layers to that scene that I could not pick up on (other than the Major literally saying where he was from because his accent was weird).
Whereas the Italian scene with Landa was so on the nose, anyone could spot it.
