Why would humans evolve full gills to breath underwater before even evolving kidneys that allow them to drink seawater? Even whales and dolphins never evolved gills, while dehydration from lack of freshwater would kill people constantly.

In the world the film defines, people are drinking their own piss and constantly struggling to stay hydrated. While Costner's gills give him very little advantage over anyone else, he can dive a little deeper and longer, but people aren't suffering from a fish shortage they are suffering from a water shortage.

it's a mutation. it doesn't follow any kind of logic.
mutations are generally neutral or slightly harmful.

if it's beneficial they have a reproductive advantage so the mutation is spread through the population.

there are all sorts of mutations in the human genome like Down's Syndrome

basically and it really wasn't by the fault of anyone. one of the sets was destroyed in storm and sank, there were some production problems and that put 75 million extra on the budget.

if that didn't happen it would have made money. Another thing that hurt its domestic box office was that the critics completely shit all over it. back then people actually gave those people the time of day and their opinions mattered.

>Can anyone explain to me why this movie has such a bad reputation?
Its one of those movies that has the same story as others in Hollywood. The budget. Hollywood hates when a movie comes along that has a budget much larger than the norm. They hate the idea of that higher budget becoming the new normal. So when a film does that they will create a unified campaign against a film hoping it fails. That way it will discourage anyone else from trying to make something so monetarily extravagant again. Its an open secret they do this. They will coordinate with critics to give it bad reviews. They will hire pundits to shit talk it on television shows. Waterworld was one of those films. Its budget at the time was egregious. So collectively the industry wanted to sink it, no pun intended. You can probably find a list of films Hollywood has intentionally gone after because of budgets they didn't want becoming normal. Offhand I can think of Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within which they also went after for the same reason. It was a foreign company devoting a massive amount of money to a 3D animated film. They did not want someone setting a new standard in that arena

The barge they were literally living on was transporting food goods and cigarettes.
Smokers had both
1. Basic necessity
2. Chemical addiction
to build an army and eventually made a somewhat sustainable ecosystem of raiding other people.
Until the barge ran low on fuel.

They sure don't do it anymore. 300+ million dollar budgets are the norm now and the movies are abysmal. Worse than 30-40 million dollar movies decades ago. Then they get mad when the movies don't make 2.5 times the budget and blame the audience for not turning out to pay almost a billion dollars to make a profit

I'll give you a reason, it sucked! Also, while it was innovative for the time, the animation was still in the uncanny valley territory.
I agree with you on most everything else, but it's strange how in the last 15 years budget over runs have become the norm for blockbusters. I know that's because they're way more corporate made than they used to be, but you'd think with their revenue streams in rentals and video sales almost completely gone, they'd try to rein their costs in more than they have. I mean 300 million for a fucking ant man movie? 270 million for fucking snow white? What the fuck are these retards thinking?

It’s a fictional movie so I would get too hung-up on plot holes but it’s obvious that fully functioning gills could not possibly evolve within 500 years so my assumption was that the melting of the polar ice caps was initiated by, or resulted in, some nuclear exchange or meltdown(s). The increase in mutagenic material meant that there were more mutations occurring. Most would be deleterious but some might not be and Kevin Costner’s were almost surely the result of horizontal gene transfer with fish or amphibians. It could also be that there was a genetic modification program at the onset of the polar melt when they realized that terrestrial life was not going to continue. Kevin Costner might be a direct lineage of these people.

Waterworld is an entertaining and fun movie and the only reason it got shit on was because the industry and media like to double down on slamming movies when they’re over budget and have issues. It’s bizarre because even before they’ve seen the product they like to set it up simply to knock it down. The average movie goer doesn’t give a shit about movie making politics yet when they hear all the reviewers and industry insiders shitting on it they’ll stay away or prematurely adopt an uninformed opinion based on this cultivated word-of-mouth. Sad!

If you were an ally you should know that trans people have been around since people have been around. There's ample evidence for it, and many cultures have gender groupings that go beyond just male and female. There's nothing unique about the last 500 years.

They all want to be the next billion dollar earner. If they hit one it attracts a whole new crop of investors aka producers who will fund shit. That's the trick with Hollywood. Don't spend your own money, make a film with the money from someone else. If it hits you profit, if it fails you lose nothing and they can claim it as a loss on their taxes
