I think Dale always wanted to be a father but couldn't. When it was becoming obvious as Joseph was growing up who he looked like Dale decided to go along with it because beggars can't be choosers. His only other choice was to divorce, lose half of everything and end up alone because nobody except a Conchita(immigrant looking for a Green Card like Cotton) would be with him. Nancy was fine and Dale was lucky to be hitting it. I think he resented her and John Redcorn inside so he instead chose to be the best father to Joseph to spite Redcorn and deeply shame Nancy. It worked. John Redcorn would end up watching Joseph and Dale from a distance having father/son moments while he couldn't be involved and tell the truth. The only problem was that the rest of the community knew and had to go along with it to keep the peace. That's the worst part about this. Sooner or later someone could bully Joseph or Dale that they are not related and the whole neighborhood would collapse.
