At this point I'm fucking checked out of this movie. Are you fucking kidding me right now? Seriously? Get to the freaking movie you motherfuckers! Who does this Lynch dude even think he is? Then some fucking Giant Slug thing with hands and feet starts talking about 2 more planets. Fucking Ix and how they have better machines than some other planet Richese. None of that was in the exposition dumps! You've already thrown fucking 6 planets and 5 factions at us and the movie barely even fucking started!

I see now why the critics call the source material “notoriously impenetrable” and why book readers who have managed to digest it often settle into a palpable smugness over that achievement.

And they are saying how much of the story is devoted to sci-fi bureaucracy. Which elites have import/export rights in which provinces? What are the specific bylaws governing a leadership transition? If someone wants to lodge a complaint, which regulatory body must they contact?

Like hella come on man! I didn't fucking sign up to play a session of fucking Twilight Imperium! I just wanted to sit back and watcha comfy movie and now I'm upset and came here to rant about it because it is not going to fucking happen! You told me Lynch Dune was fucking kino, you motherfuckers you! Is there a way to watch this without the massive exposition dumps? Also please no smug BookBros takes. We get it, you have a grasp on one of the most difficult Sci-Fi stories of all time. Don't want to hear it anymore.

“show don’t tell” retards who flip out at the slightest hint of exposition are the same losers jerking themselves off over the opening crawl in star wars and all the other telling and not showing that Lucas does

LYNCHED. Just give up, Lynch's version of Dune is obviously too advanced for you. I mean imagine being filtered by a quick history lesson that sets up the kino you're about to see

>sci-fi bureaucracy
My friend has read the book and he said the the majority of it is actually this. The movie likely explains it in a monologue at the beginning because you need the backstory of what the factions are fighting about but they did not want that to be the focus of the film.
The inner-monologue of the main character also serves as dialogue that drives the story forward, which is an unusual approach.
Imagine if Lynch had directed Return of the Jedi.

Do they sell an annotated version of Dune? Like you know how for Wizard of Oz or Alice in Wonderland they are very much a book of their time and there are lots of references and stuff that you just won't get. Do they sell something similar for Dune to explain and annotate everything for the average reader that hasn't Fucking written their Master's Thesis on it?

Bro, its in English, not a foreign language. The only weird shit is in universe stuff you pick up as you read, that characters explain, just like they do in the movie

tbf that's flavor dialogue. you don't need to know those planets. you just need to see that these two very important people have all kinds of galactic-level affairs to discuss, sometimes casually.
>I didn't fucking sign up to play a session of fucking Twilight Imperium
so you've played Twilight Imperium I presume? so you must understand how awesome it is. In fact it would be better to have that experience distilled into movie form so I don't need to devote 8 hours and my entire social battery to it.

everything else you said is correct. it's all very clunky

Me, Grimlock, say David Lynch’s Dune movie from 1984 big mess, like Decepticon junk pile! Grimlock no like! Movie try tell big story, but chop-chop like me axe, make head hurt! Too much talky-talk, not enough smash!

Story go fast, like Wheeljack zoom, but no make sense! Paul human, him say big words, “spice flow,” but Grimlock no care! Why no fight more? Sting human wear shiny pants, look like silly Sparkplug, not scary bad guy! Him laughable, not fierce like Megatron!

Picture stuff? Grimlock say some look weird-good, like Lynch brain all twisty, but most like old Energon cube, all fade and weak! Sandworm? Pfft! Look like big rubber toy, not mighty like Dinobot chomp! Set look like cave, but bad cave, not Grimlock strong cave!

Kyle human try be hero, but him face all sleepy, no roar like Grimlock! Him ride worm? Me no feel power, only yawn! Whole movie feel like story told by dumb bot who forget half!

Lynch, him run from this movie, say “no mine!” Grimlock agree! Dune like broken blaster—look cool, but no shoot! Grimlock say watch for laugh, but no expect big boom or clear tale. Me, Grimlock, smash this movie with one tail whip!

Dune is like middle school level English reading & comprehension. If you can't understand it, then you're not smarter than a middleschooler.

I found the exposition to be one of the best aspects of the movie. I had watched the new movie first and it was nearly incomprehensible. The motives of the characters made no sense.

The 1984 movie was far more cohesive.

I don't mind this at all. Let's me know they've put a lot of effort into the story and thoroughly fleshed it out. It's worthwhile to get invested into the characters and what's happening. Instead of modern movies where nothing matters and it's all just made up on the fly.

Best version of the Lynch/DeLaurentis Dune is the two-part TV miniseries. Pads out runtime with extended cast credits that make use of Toto's underrated score, and has some illustrated to give the rundown on the universe at the start (narrated by some dude not Irulan). Only downside with this version is Irulan is even more useless.
