Who the fuck even knows?
It's about anxiety and his aunt not approving of him being a poof or something.
Why would old hags think they should be the ones to tackle boy's mental health?

Unironically when you become a CalArts instructor anon. YOU teach current gen kids to stylize and good fucking luck with that, art has been evolving, from mimicking realism to stylization, to experimental narratives to a current complete focus on narratives about personal issues in spite of losing the art of stylization. Whoever is teaching in CalArts right now will have to inspire the students to stop fucking moping around their mommy issues and bring the focus back to childrens stories, except childrens stories have been dead for over a century.

I was already mad about Turning Red, cos China sanitizes their image with "panda diplomacy". If she cared about CCP's brutality to anyone who doesn't take their micromanaging, why is she using a panda (china=red) for identity? Find some other shit a genocidal regime isn't using for PR.

2001 is late for having a phone in the west. Palm devices weren't very expensive, most people had at the least a Nokia, early web browsing on phones was in the 90s (WEP). You're either from a non top ten economy or your memory is fucked.

But kids in high school had cellphone in 2001

False. If I had seen that trailer for this as a young boy, I would have immediately thought it was for girls because of the soft designs and lack of violence, then I would have gone back to reading my Judge Dredd comics.

I think the 3310 was either the 2nd or 3rd phone I had, the first were hand me downs from my dad in the late 90s and you're right they weren't used constantly like today, just emergency "come pick up" phones. But the 3310 absolutely was, and it was released in 2000. And having elementary kids act older isn't exactly surprising for hollywood.

It's intended for adults that want to imagine it's what kids would enjoy.

Similar to Steven Universe. Bores actual kids, so develops more of an audience with adults who want a 'safe' thing to enjoy.

Took me a while to realize part of what's happening with designs like this is roundedness is coded as being kids while sharp angles are for mature/serious characters.

Honestly that's not all that bad of a premise but the character design is just too fucking ugly and gay looking

I could see young boys that would otherwise be drawn into the idea being alienated by just how gay the main character looks

It's more tragic when you remember this was supposed to be Pixar's big "we still know how to make boy movies" picture and it turned into another generic "my differences are what make me special" slop.
Disney ruined Pixar's writing.

The director and his friends.
Seriously, it's hyper-specific and alienating when it's always the director or writer's self-insert whining about how hard it is to be a child of non white ethnicity : Turning Red for Asians, Elio for beaners etc. There was a good article in The New Yorker about this phenomenon (titled There Is More Than One Way to Be Exhausted by โ€œTurning Redโ€) which pointed out that 'If one sees the movie as too sexualized or adult-themed for a young audience, that suggests only the conservatism and squeamishness of the critic.'

>The film was conceived by Molina as a "personal coming-of-age story about youthful alienation."[9] Molina was inspired by his childhood growing up at a military base and eventual enrollment at the California Institute of the Arts when developing the film's story. Director Madeline Sharafian described his feelings on the private art school by saying "he felt like he'd found his people there, he'd found his world".[18] After working on the project for a couple of years, Molina felt like he "ultimately wasn't the one to see it to the finish line," exiting the film in order to work on Coco 2 (2029).[19]
