Why did musicals die out as a genre?

You had really popular ones like singing in the rain/willy wonka/les miserables.

Musicals died with the studio system. When the studios had to sell off their theater chains, they couldn't afford to make the big production musicals that they had been making. It would cost to much to hire cast, crew, musicians, song writers, choreographers, etc. just for one film. Also, the 60s were too cynical for musicals and a lot of them flopped.

They haven't died out, they died down. I know they were way more prevalent during the Hays code era and Oliver! winning the Academy Award was Old Hollywood trying to keep the revolution down but after you have movies like Midnight Cowboy and the Godfather a winning best picture, musicals become more and more niche. But yeah, the last musical I remember making noise was Wicked part 1 and it wasn't exactly up against of other musicals.

But on the flip side, remember when Glee and High School Musical were everywhere and you couldn't escape fucking gay musicals? So cool those days are dead.

HSM I'll give a pass to, but the makers of Glee should be beaten with shovels. Fuck jukebox musicals.
