>A 19th century engraving depicting one of the strangest “duels” of all time between a man and a dog. >The circumstances surrounding a murder led to this curious duel. The slain victim was Aubruy de Montdidier who was murdered by his “friend”, Chevalier Maquer in a forest outside of Paris, France. The only witness to this crime was Montdidier’s large dog. Maquer buried the body in the presence of the dog. The dog remained at his master’s shallow grave until forced by hunger he went to the home of Chevalier Ardilliers, a friend of his master, to beg for food. Ardilliers noticed that there was something wrong with the dog as it wined and whimpered. The dog eventually compelled Ardilliers to follow him into the forest where the animal led his master’s friend to discover the grave. Ardilliers and his servants dug up the corpse. Sometime later when walking on the street Ardilliers and the dog met Maquer and the dog attacked him with such ferocity that it took several men to pull him off. It was unusual behavior for the dog, as it was known that the beast was of a tranquil and pacific temperament. This occurred again on several separate occasions, which gave rise to suspicion from many people. Finally, all was reported to the King. The monarch made the decision that the guilt or innocence of Maquer was to be decided by a trial by combat in which dog and man were to be the principles.
>The combat took place on the Isle of Notre-Dame. The dog was led into the lists by Ardilliers were he was loosed upon Maquer. There is more than one account of what transpired but this engraving depicts Maquer armed with a stick to defend himself against this large dog. The stick being an insufficient weapon of defense, the dog attacked savagely and seized Maquer by the throat. Maquer reportedly screamed that if the dog were pulled away that he would confess to the crime. Maquer was hanged for the murder that he committed.

>>211880555Are you serious? Even the Bible has references to dogs.
>>211867151Disagree.
You can say it's the same kind of sloppa, just an ancient version of it. But, at the very least it managed to survive the test of time and remain relevant for thousands of years. There's at least something lastingly relevant about the stories.
Meanwhile, I genuinely do not believe that Marvel is still going to be relevant in the 2040s. It's already a has-been genre, the only reason that same type of movie is getting made is because institutions are too slow and ponderous to respond to market changes in a timely manner.

Dogs Never Die (They Are Sleeping in Your Heart)
Some of you, particularly those who think you have recently lost a dog to ‘death’, don’t really understand this.
…I’ve had no desire to explain, but won’t be around forever and must.
Dogs never die. They don’t know how to.
They get tired, and very old, and their bones hurt. Of course they don’t die.
If they did they would not want to always go for a walk … Nope, dogs always want to go for a walk.
However, dogs get very very sleepy. That’s the thing, you see.
…When you think your dog has died, it has just fallen asleep in your heart.
And by the way, it is wagging its tail madly, you see, and that’s why your chest hurts so much and you cry all the time.
Who would not cry with a happy dog wagging its tail in their chest. Ouch! Wap wap wap wap wap, that hurts.
But they only wag when they wake up. That’s when they say:
“Thanks Boss! Thanks for a warm place to sleep and always next to your heart, the best place.”
When they first fall asleep, they wake up all the time, and that’s why … you cry all the time. Wap, wap, wap.
After a while they sleep more. …They were a GOOD DOG all their life … it gets tiring being a good dog all the time …
So understand, after they have been sleeping in your heart, they will sleep longer and longer.
But don’t get fooled. They are not ‘dead.’ There’s no such thing, really. They are sleeping in your heart, and they will wake up, usually when you’re not expecting it.
It’s just who they are.
I feel sorry for people who don’t have dogs sleeping in their heart. You’ve missed so much.

Both poems touch deeply on the love we share with dogs—and the inevitable sorrow when their time ends. The Kipling poem offers a poignant, structured reflection on the heartbreak of loving a dog. The Montague piece leans into a comforting metaphor: true loss is a nap in our hearts, not a final goodbye.

>>211888865I'm a schi/x/o but I know my previous dog was like some kind of family guardian or something. She protected us from some crazy shit, and I swear she reincarnated in our new dog. I could feel her internally after she died, as if I hosted her, until one day she left and it was like losing her all over again.
Fastforward some months, I see a dog, know I need to own her, she's mine, etc, then find out after finishing the paperwork that the new dog was born the day I felt the old one's spirit leave me. It's definitely made me question reincarnation, especially as my other dog nears the end of his life. It seems more like they just need a new body and trade it in, when I look at my other dog. But I do think reincarnating is a choice, not mandatory.
