In the books he's a member of a guild of assassins. The guild was formed by slaves in the mines of Valyria (the city of the dragonlords that got wrecked to smithereens) and allegedly had a hand in destroying them. There are two main competing theories circling the guild and him:
1. He's tasked with getting a book in Oldtown that will help the guild get rid of dragons, in order to stop the ascension of new dragonlords (Daenerys).
2. He's still tasked with getting such book or something else, and no one knows to whom his allegiance truly belongs to.

It's so dumb that they got rid of Aegon. Cersei would have died due to her incompetence and greed. She was stupid to include all the way to the end. Aegon comes in as a wildcard ruler. It pays off Varys' whole plot. The Westerosi people love him and hate the usual Game players since they destroyed the kingdom. Dany arrives too late and is seen as a foreign tyrant contributing to her getting increasingly violent and breaking everything resulting in Jon killing her.

Rewatching it it has its moments but it’s mostly carried by the ambitions and gravitas of the actors and their portrayal over anything the characters actually say, which inevitably is an endless series of gimmicks related to what medieval people are supposed to have thought according to communists. Still enjoyable since I’m a modern too but I’m curious if it’s like that in the books as well
