I think the motivation is pretty plausible in the sense he was that desperate but could have really hammed that aspect up instead of just suddenly him burning shit and running off.

For me the reason why it didn't work was just how little the film punished them for taking on this downright suicidal mission, if the NATO guy was introduced earlier & stayed around to help a bit more then it'd be a bit plausible but there was just zero of that helpless distressing emotion you'd expect in a scenario like that.

The first half was visceral, intense and grim (father's personality and parental ability) juxtaposed by the lightness, humor, color and space of the second half (literally the mother's influence) a very interesting tone that is similar to some sort of child gothic fantasy adventure - which ends in Spike finally learning what death is and it's consequences, and consequently, thirsts for knowledge on what does is mean to live (thus his decision to travel alone). The kid even experiences an ayahuasca/native american dream/spirit trip as symbolism for his expanding consciousness and acceptance of the inevitable.
The film is a soulful coming of age children's adventure - one of the most lovely narratives in fiction.
I guarantee this board will be all over it once RLM drops a positive review.

is it perfect? no. there are minor plot holes which are ultimately inconsequential to the themes and the narrative. I can conjure explanations for each of your points, as could the writers, but I think ultimately it doesn't matter too much (at least for my personal enjoyment) because they are mere setting and window dressing for the story the movie is trying to tell. The movie feels like writers wrote two different coming of age stories; one a father and son story about changing roles and how they see each other, the other about mother and son about letting go. I would have loved if they kept all the cinematography of this movie, but made it entirely about Spike and Isla journeying across Britain, encountering other settlements and the strange new behaviours of the infected. It could be centrered around Spike coming to terms with his mother's impending death, about her fraying mind taking with it the women she used to be, about letting go of an idealised past to overcome the harmful adaptions made to keep it, embracing change, then being coached through grief by a more empathetic male role model, and channelling those feelings into meaningful action.
