Comfy as fuck and surprisingly solid, but not a timless masterpiece or anything. Definitely one of my favorite shows to catch marathons of on Nick at Nite back in the day.

And I don't usually like skinny girls, but Shelley Long was pretty gorgeous here. Kirstie Allie wasn't half bad as a replacement, and her dynamic with Sam was refreshing.

I wussed out and can't complete the season where Diane is supposed to leave because I don't want to move on. But I guess I'll just bite the bullet. Diane is so sweet though.

Frasier is the latest installment and had a Netflix revival so you can see how it can still be a household name. Cheers' final season finale did record breaking numbers. It's a cultural icon of north american media and has been referenced throughout the years in various other entertainment so it has its influence. But yeah no its time in the sun has long come and gone. Not a bad show at all to get into. Especially if you were born sometime in that era. Always refreshing to get a little blast from the past sometimes, you know?

Coach, he did more for the show. They both work great but the earlier seasons were a bit rougher, making Coach's humor more impactful.

Diane herself wasn't necessarily the problem, but the show wasn't very funny until after she left. Most episodes had like 1 decent joke and many times I didn't even laugh at all in an episode. Sam and Diane have almost zero chemistry, it seems entirely forced by Diane (and at one point Sam I guess). Sam and Rebecca have much more natural chemistry, which is kind of ironic, since the premise is Sam forcing it because he can't stand that there's someone who's not into him.
Coach was pretty much the only funny character in early seasons but once you get to the Rebecca seasons everyone is decently funny. Still not as funny as shows that came after it though. It's comfy, at least. But even in terms of comfy sitcoms there are shows that are consistently funnier.

Basically you watched what would become Fraiser writing staff slowly take over the show. Last few seasons of cheers is basically pre fraiser from a writing perspective. Fraiser is just late cheers with different characters.
Everybody talks about coach vs woody they are the exact same comedic device so it's just who you liked better as the actor/character. Coach=woody.

Becoming a regular at a dive bar is comfy as hell. Do not go to any cheers branded bullshit in Boston. Find an Irish place in southie or some italian place on the north end. Bantz like a Masshole but donโ€™t get stabbed. Actually those fucking places are gentrified by now.

That's why John Cleese shows up to tell them they're a terrible couple and Diane is too autistically in denial to accept reality. Their entire relationship was just her calling Sam a retard 1000 times while annoying the hell out of him. I get why Sam liked her on some physical level but surgically removing her was the only way to go, and the jokes made about her after she left were funnier than anything Diane said or did. Cliff, Norm and Carla made for a pretty funny trio during the Coach seasons too btw

Have to say the more I watch cheers the more I agree with this. That it is just that I've watched fraiser so much that I can almost recite every episode so I read the description and go "nope already know all the jokes on that one... next"
Cheers however I'm still not bored of and have watched it a ton recently.

It was still good without him. It was the insistence of the Sam/Diane relationship that caused the quality to slowly drop. It was supposed to be an ensemble show but that arc started to become a central focus far too often.

I thought it was better without him. Woody was like Coach but he was more aww shucks country bumpkin and his brain just didn't move fast enough compared to the big city folk.
Coach seemed like he was brain damaged or legit dumb. And so many of his eps were "tonight on a very special Cheers" where Coach cries over some hit.
