they're good enough as standalone scifi movies but very, very bad Dune adaptations

also Zendaya is a really bad actor. She plays the same Gen Z American girl whether she's spider-man's girlfriend or comes from a distant planet

This seems to be happening a LOT. They're creatively bankrupt and don't like the risk of making new properties. They take existing brands with name recognition and make something barely similar then slap on the recognizable label. Old fans are pushed away as it becomes a pale shadow of itself losing everything that made it popular in the first place. New "fans" don't put much thought into it, they just know it was popular at some point, so it must be good enough for them too!

They are only good together. If you watch either of them standalone, they're garbage. I know that should be obvious but the first one was very underwhelming and if you watched the second one years after without rewatching the first one ahead of it, you probably ended up disliking them.

They buttrape the source material in the ass, mainly Zendaya Chani. Chani is meant to be ride or die for Paul. Zendaya Chani seemingly can't stand Paul and tries to undermine him at every turn. Also more pointless Hollywood redhead erasure by turning the redheaded Harkonens in to balds.

They feel sterile and lifeless. A lot of that is down to Tim and Zendaya probably. I think something halfway between Dunc and Lynchโ€™s Dune would be really perfect.

Bladerunner 2049 was Villynuvyโ€™s only truly good movie imo, that had a lot more vitality and life to it for some reason.

Arrival was insanely lame and gay.

Blade Runner and 2049 by extension has a streak of humanity and hope within it that resonates with human nature, probably a holdover of PKD

Dune in contrast has a more core message about civilizational structures which doesnโ€™t translate as well to film and which is intentionally buried by Hollywood anyway

the main thing bringing Bladerunner 2049 is that it turns into a fanficiton sequel halfway through. Once Harrison Ford appears, the movie goes downhill but it's just barely saved by the main character.

Arrival is pronatalism propaganda and is all about will. The will to give birth to someone you know will die ahead of you. The will to make a handshake with destiny.

Blade Runner is almost bereft of human emotion. What little wimper there is becomes negligible before the uncaring architectural abominations that fill its world's skies.

Having read Dune up to Messiah, I'm not even sure there is a core message. I view it as a coming of age young adult novel about a princeling having to face an impossible situation and later bearing the consequences of his choices.

Really? Theres several pretty blatant themes. Generally itโ€™s a condemnation of social engineering and man making his own fate/destiny, the idea that humans could ever be capable of generating a perfect utopia or having absolute control is depicted as absurd. Itโ€™s also a commentary on feminine vs masculine power structure; the Bene Gesserit control reproduction and manipulate on a social level through indirect influence (women) but ultimately bend to the will of a patriarch who can actually exert his will directly and dominantly.

It fits the context facing Muad'Dib.
