Why does 2nd arc just end with no ending?
The entire 2nd arc is flashbacks of Taiki finding a master.
And it ends with him finding Gyousou.
However, the final shot reveals Taiki is back in human world and seems to suffer from amnesia and Gyousou is nowhere to be seen.
Show goes in 20 more episodes but neither Taiki or Gyousou are mentioned or seen again.

Don't fall for the suggestions. Escaflowne is incredibly overrated. It has superb hand drawn animation when nothing is moving and besides a few key moments that anons like to post webms off its not the greatest animation when the little action it has happens, it barely does anything with its concept of medieval mecha to the point where some fights you dont even see. The plot was so uninteresting and unimpactful that I watched it a year ago and couldn't tell you shit about the plot. Maybe the movie is better but I honestly couldn't recommend sitting through 26 episodes of wasted potential that doesn't do anything with its world except look pretty. As far as mecha and isekai go, it fails on both fronts.

Isekai is an bad genre because the world they get sent to doesn't feel real, or at least feels much less real than it otherwise would. For one thing multiverses tend to devalue and make individual universes feel superfluous-who cares what happens to it, there's probably infinity more. But also every way they contrive to have the protagonist reincarnate there is so arbitrary, contrived, and unrealistically neat and convenient that you just can't believe in the scenario at all. Why the fuck would that happen. Why the fuck would that be how anything works. Why is the universe bending over backwards to like reward you for pushing a kid out of the way of a train or whatever in such an adolescent, blunt way.

Reincarnation within this universe works as an idea. It feels poetic, forgetting everything but some inner part of you retaining what you've learned and experienced, this long march towards transcendence through a dialectic with the world across time and nations and species, the same lessons reinforcing themselves into an instinct towards elevating yourself beyond the transient and crude particulars of your current life. It all has stakes and shared meaning because it takes place in the same world, the only world, and because the process of taking things from one life to the next is subtle, subconscious, and mysterious, unclear, like the grander workings of life and death and being should be.

Isekai is garbage. Its not convincing as what it is and it abandons the possibility of simply being a good, internal story about the world they go to. Every Isekai, even the better ones, would be improved by simply being a story about characters from that world. Even the comedies. Even Konusuba barely actually does anything with the fact that Kazuma is from a different world with a completely different culture. No fun culture clash or disorientation. He adapts in like 5 minutes. He may as well just be a bit of a shithead from there.
