Why was this SS guy so eager to backstab his own side and collaborate with the enemy?

He was never a true believer, just efficient at his job and used that to garner himself a comfortable position in the heirarchy. He also sees the writing on the wall for the reich and is looking to secure his future. He's an opportunist.
