I think it's Rin Tin Tin. Absolutely massive doggo star in the late 1920s to early 1930. Beloved by everyone at the time. The bottom falling out on that style of movie on his owner was brutal.
Single biggest movie or most viewed animal? Maybe the Toto dog in Wizard of Oz.
Biggest fake movie star animal? King Kong. Most well know over icon level would be the mouse for Disney.

Yes it was, nearly all the supposed "similarities" had been highly misrepresented by the main proponent of the claim, as well as a lot of false information thrown around. It's likely the series had some influence on the generation of animators at that time given the timeframe, but the claims of 1:1 plagiarism are dubious at best.

>Morris, a famous alligator known for his appearances in movies and TV shows, most notably the 1996 comedy Happy Gilmore, has died at around 80 years old at the Colorado Gator Farm.
>Measuring nearly 11ft and weighing 640lbs, Morris had a long Hollywood career beginning in 1975 after being rescued from an illegal pet situation in Los Angeles. Though his exact age is unknown, the reptile was estimated to be over 80 years old based on his growth rate and tooth loss. He retired in 2006 and spent his final years at the Colorado sanctuary.
>Morris featured in several major films such as Interview with the Vampire, Dr Dolittle 2, and Blues Brothers 2000, as well as TV shows such as Coach and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. But undoubtedly his most iconic role was alongside Sandler in the golf-centered comedy.

>When the film was released, some animal welfare organizations alleged to have had a number of complaints from people who had seen the film and were concerned that it could not have been made without cruelty.
(Gillespie, P. (April 15, 1990). "Cat Cruelty Claim Over Kids' Movie". The Sunday Mail.)
>The film was reported to have the approval of the American Humane Society. The American Humane Association attempted to investigate cruelty rumors through "contacts in Europe who normally have information on movies throughout the world." While noting that the contacts had also heard the allegations, they were unable to verify them.
>The same report noted that several Japanese Humane Societies allowed their names to be used in connection with the film and that the film "shows no animals being injured or harmed.
>The following Japanese Humane Societies allowed their names to be used in connection with the picture:
>Japan Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals
>Japan Animal Welfare Society
>Japan Animal Protection & Administration Society
>Japan Veterinarian Medicine Associations
>Japan Pets Association

I'm going to lean towards a "Whoa....KIMBA....sounds like....SIMBA....it must be a 1:1 plagiarism and I don't need to investigate this any further" scenario. I will not rule it out as a possibility, obviously, but I will conclude that most of the people repeating the claim are doing so without any real substantiation for it and are just repeating something they heard from other people on the internet.

>the cat falling into the water
the gif already posted, you can see it survives and immediately surfaces and begins swimming to shore
>dog VS bear
baby black bear that was not wild, declawed, the dog was maybe a little distressed but otherwise fine
>"broken" cat paw

>snake VS cat
it's a harmless grass snake

Pretty much, there's also other scenes that have abrupt cuts that were obviously done with the intention of saving the animals from a dangerous situation, I mean, the movie was made in the 80s and we all know back then actors always got banged up because everything was practical, no CG or anything, so it is logical some of the animals may have gotten hurt, there's however a huge line between that and the insane claim that they killed dozens upon dozens of cats and dogs to make the film.

Yes, it's right there in the American Humane Society report mentioned
>The only characters are animals. According to the production company, they all belonged to Hata, a zoologist and one of Japan's most noted authors of childrens books. According to information released on the film, Hata started developing what he calls "Mutsugoro's Animal Kingdom" on his private island where he has 300 animals including cats, dogs, horses, foxes, deer, racoons, bears and bison. He wanted to make a film about his animals, so he hired a crew to live on his island. They spent four years, and shot 400,000 feet of film, then spliced it and made it into a picture. Hata was also the writer and director of the film. Dudley Moore did the voice over for the animals in the American version. The main character is a cat (played by 27 different cats). The picture shows no animals being injured or harmed.
So what you're really seeing in the film, is four years of filming animals, spliced together into a light 90 minute story linked together with narration. I bet they leave out that part usually and act like it was just a usual 3-5 month film production shoot.

Carpenter was VERY impressed with the animal, particularly this shot. It was a natural actor. It has human-like pacing, it hits its cue, waits a beat, then advances a bit more. It does NOT look directly at the camera, and manages to seem as if the very obnoxious and very obvious camera isn't right there. He was a VERY good boy.
