>Disney's Pixar saw its worst-ever box office debut over the weekend with its sci-fi adventure film "Elio" earning just $21 million domestically after reportedly spending at least $250 million on production and marketing.

Why did Elio flop?

Maybe don’t reshoot a movie and balloon the budget to $250 million?

You can’t expect every animated movie to make bank, especially an original IP.

Disney should have either A) not shot the movie and release it as is or B) just write off the movie off as a tax write off. I know the latter is controversial but it is better to take a small hit than a larger one.

They literally owned 75% of the box office year over year for like ten years. Competing studios learned all the wrong lessons and killed off IP left and right trying to get a cinematic universe, and without competition and fat from their own spoils they can't justify inflating budgets any more because it becomes mathematically impossible to break even after a certain point.
And audiences get bored, they have very short attention spans, but even the most screen addicted moron will eventually get desensitized.

The real reason it flopped is because they spent $100M more than was needed to make it. It's a common strategy in modern hollywood to vastly overspend on production and still get a piece of shit as a finished product. That's what happens when you hire for inclusion instead of hiring for talent.

Sure but back before Disney took over you would actually get real marketing for the movies, you'd get Monster's Inc Branded chip bags and Incredibles Jello. I have seen Stitch branded garden tools at Home Depot and nothing Elio branded anywhere in any store, Disney obviously dumped some money into marketing one movie over the other.

I mean its not like a director of an animated movie can just fuck off and go rogue like a film director. They're not doing anything without a ton of oversight.
I have a feeling it was more a culture shift after other products had started flopping and they realized they needed to make some drastic changes.

Brown here.
It's disingenuous even for us.
Imagine a movie made in yugoslavia about the day to day life or a person who lives in toronto? They live thousands of miles away, their culture is different, their language is different, their livelyhood is different.
It comes off tone deaf.
But how can it be fixed? Build a studio from the ground up in the brown country, teach people from the brown country how to animate? No.
This is why social media will kill off old media, because it's made by the real people, blacks, whites, browns, asians
You can find good quality brown people animation online

But the movie was originally his idea, when he was a little brown kid and feelings of alienation or whatever. I think you'd be surprised the amount of leeway they give senior creative types at places like Pixar. That's why the movies have such massive budgets even though they all look the same and are just made on computers in a building somewhere. They'll spend years just fucking around. The higher-ups will basically let you get your shot to do what you want; but if "your movie" bombs then you will get axed in the next round of layoffs. Look at what happened with the director of Lightyear.

Bwcause those characters aren't brown, they're white with brown paint. Blue haired white foid writers can't and don't want to write good brown characters.
It's similar to how blacks like Peter Parker better than Miles Morales. Peter is a poor nobody, while Miles gets everything handed to him like a lefty on a scholarship.

Yeah it failed because it was an original movie. That’s definitely true even though it it looks like it might as well be a sequel to Turning Red, Coco, or Luca and set in the same universe as all nupixar movies are because it has the exact same art style as the last four or five of their movies.

Gay lil boy and vague blobbish aliens in generic childish flop style. Soon people will associate Pixar slop with AI slop, they need to move onto a different style. The film does not look interesting. Whether Good, bad or mediocre, you need your film to have a hook. Bland premise, bad art style, humour looks mild at best. Why spend £80 to take my family to see that? Especially when It'll be on Disney+ in 3 months.

it's actually so nuts that the current crop of disney execs just thinks they can go on forever making the same quality of films that put the company on the map a hundred years ago written by a handful of people
they could have spend time and energy on the beloved classics, disneyland is basically nostalgia land, instead every year they gamble hundreds of millions because "making new kids movies is what disney DOES"
just keep remastering the classics, those are timeless, those will sell, if you have to do a new film the remakes are god awful but at least they're doing better than the originals purely off nostalgia, they have a built in fanbase

important thing was you didnt see the aliens, just glowing spaceships
gave an air of mystique to it
at least felt like something you could take your sister's kids to if you have them for an afternoon
but then the extended trailer dropped, and they revealed the aliens are annoying calarts dogshit, whiney and cartoonish like Buzz Lightyear villains. But Buzz Lightyear villains are supposed to be over the top and cheesy, these Elio aliens should be intimidating, I believe the destruction of the earth is on the line? And they act like the aliens from Futurama from Omocron Persei Six. Stupid and easily manipulatable. Pass.
