They don’t, Marshmallow Ali takes a flare and runs into the swamp to lure it away from the rest of the characters while they try and escape on a boat. They make you think the D. Rex killed MCU Blade and it returns to menace Black Widow but she escapes in time and then as they’re leaving they reveal Blade somehow got away off screen despite the D. Rex having him dead to rights last we saw.

It’s weird; it’s definitely a better movie than Dominion, but I just feel worse about it because Dominion made me mad but Rebirth makes me indifferent.

Id probably go with 6/10:
Movie is very mixed bag, some good set pieces, probably the most suspenseful JP movie, a good amount of and probably the best deaths in the franchise. A lot of water sequences which are all the best parts of the movie which give it something close to its own identity. Also leans into the otherworldliness well and Edwards can make a pretty picture.

My main negatives, minor spoilers:
-making Rupert Wyatt semi villainous was extremely forced, guy literally did nothing wrong they just force things to frame it as wrong
- scarjo is borderline useless in the movie, her attitude and general demeanor is totally at odds with the film itself. There are some decent character moments that are more somber but her semi practically happy go lucky quippy shit is so unbelievably lame, and on top of that she does basically nothing in the entire movie to support her supposed title as some kind of top tier mercenary badass. The fucking nerd scientist does literally every single thing that she does.
-the script is, unexpectedly, near complete garbage. What exactly about this is the grand idea they just had to rush to make lmao. Is it the video game setup? Or is it the part where they destroy and retcon the entire world they just spent 3 movies building up and establishing?
-literally not a single puppet or animatronic
-too many callbacks. The film is aping so many scenes and beats from, mainly, the first film, especially in its later half. They have some good stuff here, why not use it as a springboard instead of just recreating shots and plot points from the original?

Anyway mixed bag but decent enough for a dinosaur movie.

Soft retcon for prior movies; it’s been a few years and dinosaurs all died out due to modern earth climate being inhospitable, except for a range in the equator.

ScarJo is hired by a pharmaceutical guy to accompany a retrieval team to the island; the company needs the DNA of the three largest dinosaurs because their abnormally strong heart structure could be the cure to heart disease. ScarJo ropes Mahershala’s boating/merc team into the expedition and the company guy brings along a paleontologist who was trained by Alan Grant.

The island isn’t the research facility for the OG park, but it’s actually Site B for the Jurassic World park. The flashback at the start takes place in 2008.

There’s a father, his two daughters, and his one daughters dipshit boyfriend who are sailing across the ocean and for some reason the Spinosaurs swam all the way out to sea and then the mosasaurus attacks the boat but doesn’t try to eat the family after capsizing the boat.

The mercenary crew hears the distress signal and Mahershala makes his crew go pick the family up. The spinosaurs show back up and attack the mercenary boat, killing the one member of the crew who was a douchebag. The older daughter tries to use the boat radio to call a mayday, but because the mercenary crew is on an illegal expedition, the company man interrupts her and she ends up going overboard when he refuses to try and save her.

The father, his younger daughter, and the dipshit boyfriend all jump overboard to try and save the older daughter and stick together.

The mercenary boat drives ashore and they make a big deal about the spinos being amphibious and that they need to leave the beachhead immediately - explicitly showing two spinos headed right for the beach. A female mercenary gets eaten by a spino that was already on the beach and had been sleeping.

They play really sad music after her death and it’s framed as something tragic, but I don’t even remember that mercs name or anything about her besides that she was the one female mercenary besides ScarJo. Udesky was more memorable.

The mercenary crew proceeds inland to get their remaining two DNA samples - I forgot to mention that during the second mosa sequence, they acquired a sample of its blood.

The family walks through the jungle and ends up sleeping on the ground for the night; dipshit boyfriend wanders off to take a piss and we notice two raptors silently emerge from the brush behind him and close in. Then the mutadon - a raptor and pteranodon hybrid - flies down behind the boyfriend and chases away the raptors and flies off with one - all while the boyfriend is too terrified to turn around.

The mercenary crew gets a sample of these big ass Godzilla sized longnecks and it’s pretty eventful.

The family find a raft they can use to traverse the river and get to the island research complex; a dilophosaurus shows up but gets scared off by a T. Rex before it can do anything.

River raft sequence with a T. Rex ensues.

Mercenary crew climbs to the pterosaur nest and acquires a DNA sample from an egg, but one of the mercenaries who’s name I don’t remember and only spoke French gets vored while by a giant pterosaur and honestly it was kinda hot.

The mercenary crew is now down to ScarJo, MCU Blade, company man, and Not Alan Grant. The crew reunites with the family at the In Gen research compound where an emergency airlift that ScarJo arranged prior to leaving is expected to arrive.

Company Man reveals that he’s a scumbag and everyone learns he was going to let the older daughter die back during the second mosa attack. He holds off the rest of the cast with a Glock 17 he acquired from some wreckage earlier.

Two mutadons fly down and menace the crew. Company Man steals a somehow still working Jeep and we assume he’s going to race to the heli pad for the inbound copter.

The chopper arrives but doesn’t see anyone at the heli pad and goes to leave, but Paleontologist uses a flare gun to signal them. The chopper returns and promptly gets munched out of the sky by the D. Rex we glimpsed in the opening. While Mahershala was looking around the complex, he saw video on a monitor showing a boat at the docks and tells everyone they can take the boat to escape the island.

Somehow, Company Man knows about the boat despite nobody ever telling him nor ever seeing a monitor and before the chopper even went down, he was already driving to the docks in the Jeep.

The crew uses facility tunnels to flee the last mutadon after ScarJo uses the Glock Company Man dropped on the first one. They miraculously exit the tunnels right where the D. Rex is and Company Man drives right into the creature, only for it to pull him out of the Jeep and eat him in half.

The rest of the crew runs to the dock and the D. Rex closes in. Blade grabs some flares and runs into the jungle to lure the D. Rex away, seemingly dying off screen but buying enough time for the rest of the crew to barely escape when the D. Rex returns.

Surprise! Blade isn’t dead and he uses a flare to signal the crew on the boat to turn around and pick him up. They do and the film ends with ScarJo, Blade, Paleontologist, and the family all boating away as some dolphins swim by.

These deaths all felt pretty brutal, they're paced nicely throughout the film and a lot of the minor characters got a bit more to do than usual. I also like that several of them are coded as graphic good guy deaths, we barely ever get that in a JP film. Only Eddie's death really.

That’s a big mistake. Gareth edwards always adds a final battle or moment with the monsters. He should have just copied the final battle of Godzilla and copy and pasted the mutos with spinos and Godzilla with drex. Throw in the mutodons as help to the drex. That sucks so much for a summer popcorn monster movie.

There’s one glaring issue I have with this film that made it feel utterly meh; technically two issues, but they both feed into each other.

The film lacks any forward momentum/urgency and it also lacks an antagonist, the latter being something prior movies had which provided the former.

JP1 has Nedry to serve as an antagonist and provide a sense of urgency and after his death this role is replaced by the raptors.

JP2 has the T. Rex couple that pursue our protagonist’s throughout the film.

JP3 has the spinosaurus and the raptor pack pulling double duty as antagonists while pursuing the humans.

JW had the Indominous.

JWFK had the Indoraptor in the second half, but had the threat of the island exploding serving to light a fire under the character’s asses for the first half.

I don’t remember much of Dominion desu.

But Rebirth lacks any dinosaur villain and the characters just meander from unrelated set piece to unrelated set piece, they have no urgency to escape the island or keep their guard up because there’s no carnivorous threat to pursue them. This lack of an antagonistic force makes the film feel meandering, a feeling that only disappears in the last half hour solely due to the introduction of the mutadons.

Black Pilot is also notable for the great animatronic work at play where there’s an actual actor being lifted up and pulled out of the plane by an animatronic, the crying and begging also earns points for showcasing his fear.

Udesky? Well, Mr Noodle has the most notable death in the film. The raptors don’t just kill him, they maim him and use him as bait. When that fails, they snap his neck.

In Rebirth?

Douchebag Merc dies via Spino, but we only see him get pulled off screen and into the ocean.

Female Merc gets spinoed in a way that’s kinda cool; she tries pulling a pallet of gear ashore on the beach, oblivious to a resting spino behind her that awakes and slides into the water. She can’t pull the pallet ashore, so she walks to the back of it and the camera doesn’t follow her; we see her disappear behind the pallet followed by a splash and a scream as the spino attacks. All we see is thrashing and holding on to the pallet before the spino drags her and the pallet into the ocean.

Black French Merc dies by getting vored, but I’m honestly not sure if he was alive or dead when the pteranadon did it because I don’t recall him screaming or any thrashing.

Thanks for posting the plot. Were they the only new dinosaurs? I ask because I didn't watch the last film, but I do like the Jurassic World Evolution games and the 3rd one is coming out and finally adding baby dinosaurs and breeding ala Zoo Tycoon. Which is great. But the films are usually tied in partially to the games so having some details on what the film contains gives an idea of what is in the games. Mutadons and D-Rex... Seems to be about it, then.

Honestly wish they'd make a DLC or something for the game where you can do a Impossible Creatures style thing with dinosaurs.

The girl you see die in the trailer by the spino jumping and the other trailer spoiled the guy getting bitten by the spino, the trailer also spoiled the rancor killing the guy in the lab, and the rancor kills a human and rips an arm off. Black guy gets swallowed alive by the giant bird thing. That’s it.

This movie was really just a fart in the wind. None of the kills had any weight to them, right from the get go. All of the characters had about 5 minutes of backstory exposition scenes each. Because of this, it took an hour to get to the island, and once there, we moved from shitty set piece to shitty set piece. They shoehorned in a Baby Yoda Dinosaur that was completely pointless. Don't waste your time. It sucks and is not worth your money.

The mutant thing was stupid, ugly, and served no purpose. At least the Indominus looked like a dinosaur and not some fat Alien reject. It also was a threat the whole movie. This thing was in the opening scene and then MIA the entire rest of the movie and only came back at the end to kill the cartoonishly evil corpo man so our good guys didn't have to.

As for the “present for the birth of every creature”, that was originally part of Hammond being a lying sleazeball from the books. Hammond in the books is a showman, a master illusionist capable of presenting and convincing people into buying a reality that was fabricated - Site B was part of the illusion; it served as an egg factory because the majority of embryos produced were unsuitable and even less resulted in baby dinosaurs that weren’t deformed. But Hammond wanted to sell to the public (and his investors) the idea that his genetics work was supremely successful and not resulting in constant stillbirths. So Sorna basically created dinosaurs en masse due to the failure rate, and the successful births were imported to Nublar.
