Such an overated, bombastic, hammy actor with the most self-absorbed and moralising political views. His movies were all failures after Citizen Kane and the latter is inferior to any John Ford or Jean Renoir movie.

Listen you don't investigated by the FBI and M15, and called out by George Orwell of all people as being a commie without showing some signs of it in private. The closest to a public demonstration of his views was condemning fellow actors for naming names.

I explicitly thinking of it when I wrote my comment. The script is all over the place and nonsensical, and the direction is awkward and feels like a rough, unfinished cut.

I've watched some Orson Welles, big fan, he has some great understanding of the art. Was set in the 50's then in the 60's mixed in with the flower movement.
So I quantum jumped to him. Went to him when he was old. He was in one of those white full body towels and resting up. Had a chat about some of his visions. A truly elegant man.

>George Orwell

From Orwell's brief 1940 review of Hadley Cantril's book "Invasion from Mars" about Welles's War of the Worlds "panic":

...The survey does not reveal any single all-embracing explanation of the panic. All it establishes is that the people most likely to be affected were the poor, the ill-educated and, above all, people who were economically insecure or had unhappy private lives. The evident connection between personal unhappiness and readiness to believe the incredible is its most interesting discovery. Remarks like 'Everything is so upset in the world that anything might happen,' or 'So long as everybody was going to die, it was all right,' are surprisingly common in the answers to the questionnaire. People who have been out of work or on the verge of bankruptcy for ten years may be actually relieved to hear of the approaching end of civilisation. It is a similar frame of mind that has induced whole nations to fling themselves into the arms of a Saviour.

Nah, Reefer Madness knew it along. The social acceptance of weed has played and is currently playing a pivotal role in the downfall of the west. You don't reach the levels of shamelessness currently on display in America without the masses first being too numb to do anything when it starts happening, and that all begins with weed, fent, opiods, etc.

Americans can't play Shakespeare. Compare Paul Scofield playing King Lear with Orson Welles, it's a mess, a really brutal mogging.
