Do you think horror is kind of a shit and limiting genre for movies? Most of my favorite horror scenes are from movies that are not strictly horror, the contrast with the rest makes them stand out way more (pic related). It's hard to consistently maintain tension for an hour or more without it turning into a slog, which most horror movies I've watched felt like.

That's why suspense thrillers are better than "horror" movies. I'm not talking about A24 slop, I'm talking about The Exorcist, even Christine. The first 4 Friday the 13th movies I love but that's because they're more hang out horror movies.

I think creating horror for the screen is difficult because most people don't want that in their lives and don't want to remember it to write down later. I would label it a difficult exercise.

Your projection is stupid and you should feel bad. I have a reverence for things that scare me. They stick with me for a long time, especially if they make me uncomfortable. But horror movies very rarely do that. A character being chased by a serial killer on a screen will never feel as visceral as it would in real life, it's just another boring cliche when you see it at this point. What I've noticed is more effective for me is horror that is more surreal and embraces its fictional nature to create impossible scenarios that would be terrifying to be in, but unfortunately it's not that common.

Yes, but only because horror attracts bad writers.
