I'm not really sure how to kick this off this time, so I guess I'll just get straight to the point lol. Let's just say... Beautiful Ohio, though not that beautiful.

It's a family coming-of-age drama/comedy set in the mid-70s directed by Chad Lowe. Two central themes of the film are the mathematical genius of the older of the two brothers, Clive (David Call), and the challenges this brings to the close ones around him, as well as the complicated and turbulent relationship between the siblings as seen through the eyes of the younger brother William (Brett Davern), who has the hots for Clive's girlfriend, Sandra (Michelle Trachtenberg).
Idk how old the siblings are but I'd say 17-19. The film also features occasional ramblings about life between William and his father (the legend William Hurt himself, RIP), pseudo-intellectual 4-member family discussions involving the mother (Rita Wilson), and, above all, William's journey of self-discovery and search for validation, as he feels overlooked by his parents as a result of them gushing all over Clive's gift for maths.
William is a rather awkward romantic lacking in social skills, and even though he tries to hide it, he's obviously simping for his brother's gf, which she eventually takes a liking to.
Clive, on the other hand, has grown incredibly arrogant. Just because everyone literally worships him for being a math genius, he simply assumes he can act superior to everyone, even his own girlfried, as if they were all beneath him. For most of the film he just stares wordlessly into the distance, absorbed in his own world, his mind drifting off to God knows where. Not to mention his stupid ass cryptic made-up language only he and Elliot (Hale Appleman) - Clive's friend who often hangs out with him, a very significant character, as we find out by the end - understand. The insolent brat was insufferable. Why was Michelle given a jerk boyfriend again? Smh.

All of this sounds pretty good on paper, but there's actually not much going on throughout most of the film, which I think is its biggest weakness; it can simply bore the viewers for quite a long while before something actually happens.
Even though these particular creators fortunately were skilled/talented enough to keep the film somewhat interesting, it still often feels a bit empty. It needed more intensity, more drama, more tension. That's why imo the best scenes were those between William and Sandra - partly thanks to Michelle, but mostly because they could at least make me feel that the story was going somewhere.

Sandra, as portrayed by Michelle, is quite a likeable character, albeit a bit rebellious and sassy. She knows exactly what she's doing when she teasingly plays with poor, inexperienced William who's clearly crazy about her (though he gets the girl in the end). Her boyfriend's family is quite dysfunctional, which visibly annoys and saddens her. For reasons never really explained, she suddenly straight up decides to run away from home, proceeds to drop down a mattress in the basement of Clive's house to sleep on, and secretly starts to live there. William discovers her and starts to sneak her some food lol. For some mysterious reason, her hideout - located literally around the corner behind the furnace - goes unnoticed for several months until the end of the film, with only Clive and William knowing about it. Their father is in the basement often playing table tennis but he never bothers to have a look.
WTF... it's such a plothole, it's ridiculous.
Sandra's also a smoker. Michelle was a casual smoker too, I wonder if this was the film wherein she picked up the bad habit (she didn't smoke before 2006 afaik).

The film seemingly marks the time since Michelle started dyeing her hair jet black. While I personally think caramel hair suited her best (like in the movie I reviewed last time for instance), black fits Sandra's personality just right.
Either way, the difference is marginal; she's as beautiful and charming as ever. This is now the third movie in a row that would've been totally forgettable if it wasn't for her. Her filmography is actually kinda sad. What a shame.
Aside from her, William Hurt and Brett Davern deliver standout performances as well. Solid acting from the whole cast.

This film also, in a way, marked a milestone in Michelle's career. First of all, she won the Breakthrough Performance award at the Sarasota Film Festival held in 2007 for her role as Sandra. Secondly, it features the only nude scene she ever did.
She was very self-conscious about it; she later said that it was one of the most horrendous experiences of her life, and that it would take an army to ever get her naked on camera again. It's the scene where you can see her naked butt, but it's from such a great distance (like 30 yards away) and at such an angle that there's really not that much to see, so don't get your hopes up. I honestly don't understand why the director insisted on it; it doesn't seem necessary, she could've just covered herself with a towel.
This scene , portraying William and Sandra's first sex, takes place near the end of the film. There's a shot of Michelle undressing into a swimsuit... only a total gay doesn't instantly think back to the famous jaw-dropping beach scene from Eurotrip.

Funnily enough, and I may be tripping, but it seemed to me that Michelle actually looked a bit nervous during that scene. Like, genuinely uneasy and clearly out of her comfort zone - which would've been out of character in case for Sandra, who's a confident, self-assured gal. Not even her stellar acting abilities could save her from the terror running through her mind. Poor girl lol.
I think it's a nice moment reminding the viewer that beneath the veil of make-believe, no matter how talented the artist is, there still remains an ordinary human.

Not sure if I had a corrupted file or something, but I do have to complain about the absolutely abysmal sound quality. Dunno what's up with that but the background score made it super hard to hear the dialogues. I had to use captions to recognize what the characters were saying. I sure hope the sound engineer was fired.

Unlike the previous movie wherein the first 30 minutes were the best and everything went downhill from there, here it's the exact opposite, with the final 30 minutes being the best part of the film. Not only because of Michelle's nude scene, but mainly thanks to an admittedly surprising twist at the very end. Bonus points for that.
For those curious: Clive is actually bi/gay, Sandra turns out to be his beard, his father catches him making out with Elliot (I told you that he's an important character), he gets mad, slaps the fuck out of his son. Fast forward 20 years, William is now married to Sandra with two kids, Clive is on his death bed surrounded by family, dying of AIDS. William eventually finds out that the secret language Clive and Elliot were using was not made up, it was actuallya Hungarian poem describing the struggle of constantly having to hide their forbidden love. In hindsight, one could pick up cues upon rewatch, but I don't really see any reason to do that.

Frankly, it's a pretty weird film. Not bad, just difficult to comprehend at times. It kind of reminds me of Mysterious Skin (2004) in the sense that it tries for an artistic undertone and ambiguity, except the latter does it much better.
Still, this is an intelligent film crafted for intelligent, perceptive audience. It's however sadly held back by a rather poor storyline containing too many empty, meandering scenes stuffed to an annoying level with references to various artists and literature that 95 % of the viewers won't and didn't care about at all. It's carried by Michelle, rest of the cast, and the unexpected ending.

To sum it up, it's not a total waste of time, wouldn't recommend nevertheless. 6/10. Meh (5/10 is bad, 7/10 is good).
