More than that, the black guy played the character guiding everyone towards progress to new heights (the second floor) while the old white man was set in his ways, trying to keep everyone in a dark basement, unwilling to allow the black man to be in charge and make the decisions. There's a lot of blatant symbolism in all of it, being made during the Civil Rights era. Discuss. George A Romero zombie movies all have many black main characters.

Don't really know about the racial allegories but I'd pick Ben, Peter and the Jamaican helicopter dude as my zombie apocalypse group. I might be the poor little white boy in that group I'm sure as hell in capable hands.

The racial allegories are very obvious. Night of the Living was released in 1968. Casting a black in that role wasnt needed. George A Romero went out his way. And the Dead trilogy all had too many blacks.

Romero's movies are pozzed but what's funny about the original NotlD is that Ben's plan got everyone killed while the old white guy's plan, who they tried to paint as the villainous character, ended up saving them.

It's the same in Day of the Dead when the girl and her band of mixed race mutts end up getting everyone killed while Captain Rhodes was in the right the entire time.

You could argue that Ben's plan was actually pretty solid but they did too many retarded mistakes along the way that doomed it. The biggest and most obvious one being the gasoline pump where Ben drops the torch on the ground and the white guy splashes gasoline on it. His plan would've most likely worked otherwise.

But yeah, Romero wants likes to play in the morally grey areas where anything can happen.

What is pathetic is Romero said the black actor was the best choice for the movie out of all the people in the surrounding cities.

One of the best zombie stories. They're better when they're kept small scale rather than global

I wonder if George read The House on the Borderland (1908) by William Hope Hodgeson. People always talk about voodoo zombies as the predecessor to Romero's version but there's a chapter in this story with much closer resemblance, where the protagonist barricades himself in his remote farmhouse with his catatonic sister and a shotgun to defend against a horde of mindless monsters. And while the monsters are man-pig things instead of undead humans, they're described as having decayed flesh.

Romero's zombies are just the feral ghouls from The Last Man on Earth stripped of the vampire traits. The whole setup of Night with people barricaded in the house while they try to get in is probably ripped off from that movie too.

At the time Romero had limited actors (Pittsburgh area and limited budget). The black guy was the best actor he could get, so he got the main part. , Romero changed his tune years later to milk the talk in OP. The basement ended up being the safest spot in the house, despite the little girl, and the black guy ended up being stupid.
Nothing deeper to it than a great zombie film.

Yeah I always thought the whole point of the movie was that the zombies were basically no threat whatsoever and the only reason any of the characters died was because they couldn’t work together and cooperate long enough to face even the most basic of outside threats. The zombies were slow and weak and you could jog right past them. Once the last girl finally gave up on staying in the death trap house she just jogged to some hunters and they cleaned the whole situation up with some shotguns like it was a canned hunt.

All of the sequels that show a ruined world kind of screw up that interpretation though but that’s basically what happens in the first movie.

It doesn't screw up that interpretation. It's still that way. But the event is supernatural and global. So billions of zombies rose all over the globe and rednecks can only handle so many

Dawn of The Dead does a great job of explaining how things went to hell by showing the apartment complex being overrun because stupid people don't wanna believe what's going on or give up their zombified loved ones.

If actors were limited, black actors were way more limited. Unless he straight up ran out of white actors to choose from, I don't buy his story that the actor was just the best one. His performance isn't anything amazing that you couldn't imagine another decent actor playing

Night of the living dead and day of the dead were both decent movies but kind of weirdly cucky and everything else he ever made was dogshit. Return of the living dead was better than anything he did
